DANBURY, Iowa -- LaVon K. Van Houten, 69, of Omaha, formerly of Danbury, died Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove, Iowa, with the Rev. Claude Maddox officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday at the funeral home. Condolences may be sent online to christensenhuffman.com.

LaVon Kay Van Houten was born on the family farm near Arthur, Iowa, on Aug. 10, 1940, to Earl and Hazel (Eng) Belstene. She began her schooling at Hayes Township country school, then graduated from Arthur High School in 1958.

On June 15, 1958, LaVon married Norman Van Houten at the Baptist church in Arthur. She helped her husband on the family farm near Danbury for many years. She also worked at the Battle Creek Times. In 1989, the couple moved to Omaha, where Norman began working in maintenance at several apartment complexes.

She was baptized member of the Baptist church near Arthur. She had a large bell collection and loved sewing and making a wide assortment of crafts. One of her greatest joys was her grandchildren.

Survivors include her devoted husband of more than 50 years, Norman; her mother, Hazel Belstene of Alta, Iowa; three daughters, Kim Simmons and her friend, Mike Scanlon of Omaha, Cindy (Steve) Vaughn of Blencoe, Iowa, and Brenda Van Houten of Omaha; four grandchildren, Chasity (Jarrod) Healy of Turin, Iowa, Brandon Albers and special friend, Aimee Wallis of Onawa, Iowa, and Sabrina Simmons and Cecelia Jones, both of Omaha; two great-grandchildren, Nevaeh and Tucker Healy; a brother, Eldon (Shirley) Belstene of Arthur; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Earl Belstene; a son, Bradley Van Houten; a sister and her husband, Audrey and Ron Steuk; and a brother, Larry Belstene.
