SIOUX CITY -- Janet Elizabeth (Bohl) Sample, 81, of Sioux City passed away on Sunday, July 11, 2010, at a local hospital comforted by family.

Abiding by her wishes, cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Kathy Martin officiating. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with family present at 6 p.m., at the funeral home. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.meyerbroschapels.com.

Jan was born April 28, 1929, in Sioux City, to Earl and Ruth (Taft) Bohl. She graduated from Sioux City East High in 1946, before attending the University of Nebraska, where she met Dewey Sample.

She married Dewey on March 12, 1949, in Sioux City. Jan worked as a legal stenographer and volunteered at St. Luke's Hospital for many years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, and enjoyed her membership to the Sioux City Boat Club, Sioux City Country Club, and 100 Club. She was a 50-year member of Kappa Delta sorority. Jan had a great command of the English language, she loved doing crossword puzzles, jumbles, and entering contests for which she won many prizes. Jan loved to golf and was a member of the Plaza Belles Bowling League. She liked to gamble and play cards. Jan enjoyed wintering with Dewey in Bullhead City, Ariz.

Jan is survived by her daughters, Sandy Skelton and her husband, Denny of Alamogordo, N.M., and Debi Heaton and her husband, Ron of Sioux City; grandchildren, who knew her as "Nana", Amy Skelton of Wyoming, D.J. Skelton of Washington D.C., Corey Heaton and his wife, Staci of Sioux City, and Brett "Spud" Heaton and his wife, Sadie of Sioux City; and great-grandchildren Bryce, Luke, Tristan, Kylee, and Maddyx.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents; and husband of 61 years.
