SIOUX CITY -- Raymond A. Besett, a longtime resident of the Siouxland area passed away in his sleep July 5, 2010, in Phoenix, Ariz.

He was born June 24, 1916, in Salix, Iowa, to Roy and Marie Besett. He attended schools in Salix and in Sergeant Bluff.

In December 1938, Ray married Betty Taggart of Sioux City. They lived in Sioux City's Crescent Park area until 1966 and had three children. In February 1975, he married Kay Chedester, widow of Levi Chedester. They lived in Sergeant Bluff for 32 years until her death in June 2007. He moved to Arizona in February 2008, so that family members could provide care for him.

Ray served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Some older Siouxland residents may remember him during his long career as a milkman. He began delivering milk to area homes in 1946 with Robert's Dairy, retiring from that company in 1973.

His three children survive him, Thomas Besett of Fountain Hills, Ariz., Judith Heckathorn and her husband, Gary of Phoenix, and Diane Besett of Clearwater, Fla. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Kay, Ray's two younger brothers, Paul and LeRoy, preceded him in death.
