SIOUX CITY -- Lois J. Holmes, 84, of Sioux City passed away Thursday, July 8, 2010, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, with the Rev. James Bruch officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Lois was born Dec. 19, 1925, in Sioux City, the daughter of Glenn E. and Hazel A. (Delap) Buchanan. She attended Sioux City schools. On Oct. 10, 1942, she married George H. Holmes in Hutchinson, Kan. To that union eight children were born. Her employment included Curtis Sash and Door and head housekeeper at Howard Johnsons. George died Oct. 21, 2001, in Sioux City.

Lois enjoyed volunteering at St. Boniface and belonged to TOPS for 35 years. She was known for her baking and knitting and sharing them with others. Her family was her greatest enjoyment.

She is survived by six children, Sandy (Mick) Biggerstaff of Ponca, Neb., Carole (Charlie) McKnight of Tempe, Ariz., Dan Holmes of Sioux City, Jim Holmes of South Sioux City, Leann (Larry) Launer of Las Vegas, Nev., and David (Jodi) Holmes of Cedar Park, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Edward Holmes; a daughter, Linda Rene Holmes; a granddaughter, Aecho Holmes; her parents; four sisters; and one brother.

Pallbearers will be John Holmes, Al Holmes, Tom Ellis, Joe Hayes, Mike Hayes and Joe Biggerstaff. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren and their children.

Memorials may be made in her name to Hospice of Siouxland.
