SIOUX CITY -- Gerrit "Gary" Gerritsen Jr., 76, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 4, 2010, at Cherokee Regional Medical Center with his childrenat his side.

At his request, private services will be held Friday. Arrangements are under the direction of Nelson-Berger Funeral Chapel in Sioux City.

Gary was born on Nov. 8, 1933 in Rock Valley, Iowa, to Gerrit and Anna Gerritsen. He married Theola Temple on Sept. 10, 1955.

He worked for both Armours and Floyd Valley Packing Companies before becoming employed with Terra Chemicals International Inc. at the Port Neal manufacturing facility. He worked there for over 25 years until he retired in 1991 as a production supervisor.

Gary was a good man. He worked hard to support his family. He enjoyed gardening, playing cards, baseball and news events. For the past several years, he spent the winters in California until his wife passed away last year. His life was more than his, but Gary would read the obituaries daily and would often comment that they were too long. So, we will leave it at that.

Gary is survived by a sister, Theodora Williamson of Centerville, S.D.; son Randall and his wife, Kimberlee, Holstein, Iowa; daughter Sandre Lens of Sioux Falls, S.D.; grandsons Jeremy Gerritsen, Torre Gerritsen, Kiley Gerritsen and Tyler Gerritsen; granddaughter Courtney Lens; several nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Theola; his parents; a sister, Catherine Brinkman; and a brother, Anthony.
