SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa -- Vernon Wallace Rich, 67, of Sergeant Bluff died unexpectedly at his residence on Tuesday July 6, 2010.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Mohr Funeral Home, South Sioux City with the Rev. Roger Madden officiating. A luncheon will be served at the funeral home following the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Waterbury Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Vernon W. Rich was born in Grafton, N.D., the son of Francis M. and Christine Alice (Bergman) Rich. He lived in the Grafton area until the age of 8, when the family moved to South Sioux City. He attended and graduated in 1960 from South Sioux City Community Schools.

Vernon worked at several packing houses in the Sioux City Stockyards as a meat cutter for several years. He then became employed as a painter for Transcico Rail Services in Sioux City. Following his retirement he worked as a property manager in Sergeant Bluff.

Vernon had a love for the outdoors, where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed bowling, playing the guitar, painting pictures and handicapping horses.

He will be missed by his family which includes his son Vernon Rich Jr. (Marcie) of Elk Point, S.D.; his daughter Kimberly Rich of Rapid City, S.D.; his brother Robert Rich (Carleen) of Sioux City; his special friend Dorothy Nieman of Sergeant Bluff; two grandsons Tanner and Brooks of Elk Point and two granddaughters of Rapid City.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Chuck.
