SIOUX CITY -- Donald R. Nolen, 79, of Sioux City died Thursday, July 1, 2010, at his daughter's home under Hospice care.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel C. Guenther officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Army National Guard. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Chapel, Christy-Smith Funeral Home. Mr. Nolen was born Feb. 25, 1931, in Lincoln, Minn., the son of Vernon P. and Anna J. (Hjort) Nolen. He moved from Minnesota to Sioux City in the mid 1940s. He graduated from Sioux City Central High School in 1949. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War with the Corps of Engineers.

He married Darlene H. Rohmiller on June 28, 1951, in Sioux City. She died Oct. 4, 1997, in Sioux City. He worked for various packing houses as a meat cutter. In 1972, he went to work for Aramark Uniform Service as a maintenance engineer. He retired in 1993.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a former member of St. Francis Catholic Church. He was a member of the Retired Teamsters Union and a former member of the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include three sons and their wives, Phillip E. and Bonnie Nolen and Craig A. and Janice Nolen, all of Sioux City and Jeffrey P. and Susan Nolen of Auburn, Ala.; two daughters and their husbands, Susan and Michael Muckey of Sioux City and Mary B. and Jerry Schubauer of North Sioux City; a brother and his wife, James R. and Marjorie Nolen of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and a sister, Verna Mae Anderson.

Pallbearers will be Scott and Mark Nolen, Brandon Lederer, Zachary Schubauer, Cody Muckey and Dennis Towner.
