9 November 1998Rodney, Iowa—Virgil Mervin Craig, 82, of Rodney, died Saturday, November 7, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Rodney United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Karen Handlke officiating. Burial will be in Little Sioux Township Cemetery, Smithland, Iowa, with military rites conducted by American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666 of Smithland. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Mr. Craig was born July 29, 1916 in Rulo, Nebraska, the son of William I and Leora (Bryan) Craig. He lived in Rulo and Fall City, Nebraska. He served in the US Army Air Corps, C.B.I. during World War II.
He married Margie Werling on October 22, 1943, in Pendleton, Ore. The couple moved to Rodney in 1957. He farmed and was employed with Army Corps of Engineers, retiring in 1977.
He was a member of Rodney United Church of Christ and American Legion Leslie Seaton Post 0666.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Jim of San Jose, California and Doug and his wife, Martha, of Mapleton; three daughters, Carmen and her husband, Frank Carda of Sioux City, Beth Ryan of Mapleton and Zella Craig of Rodney; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Virgie Vogele, his twin, of Fall City and Jessie Liberty of Lusk, Wyo.
He was preceded in death by five sisters, five brothers and a grandson.
