LAWTON, Iowa -- Helen E. Vermilyea, 92, of Sioux City, formerly of Lawton, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at a Sioux City nursing home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with Dr. Wayne Peach officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 3:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christy-Smith Morningside Chapel in Sioux City.

Mrs. Vermilyea was born Sept. 22, 1910, in Lawton, the daughter of Hermon G. and Mary H. (Goldsmith) Peterson. She had lived in the Lawton area all her life. She attended and graduated from Lawton High School and received her teaching certificate from what is now known as University of Northern Iowa.

She married Earl E. Vermilyea on June 25, 1936, at her mother's home. She taught school and was a homemaker. Mr. Vermilyea died July 28, 1991, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Lawton Community Presbyterian Church, where she was a Sunday School teacher and sang in the choir. She was a member of United Presbyterian Women's Club. She was a Cub Scout leader, a 4-H leader and enjoyed gardening, college basketball and family gatherings.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Jim and Pat Vermilyea of Lawton; two daughters, Jane Brief of Tyler, Texas, and Joan and her husband, Larry Henness, of Covina, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Clifford and Eileen Peterson of Sioux City; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a daughter, Judith Ann TeSlaa; two sisters, Mildred Holmes and Emma Peterson; and three brothers, Albert, Art and Louis Peterson.

Pallbearers will be Steve Shults, Jon Warkentin, Brian Raymon, Eric Lewis, Jason Henness and Mark Vermilyea.
