Charles David Kunkel, 74, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

Private family services will be held. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon today at Christy-Smith Berkemier Chapel.

Mr. Kunkel was born April 6, 1928, in South Sioux City, the son of Harold and Vivian (Phelps) Kunkel. He attended Dakota City Public Schools. He served in the Maritime Marines during World War II. Following his discharge, he returned to Sioux City.

He married Rose Girard on April 22, 1946, in Sioux City. He worked for Sioux City Foundry, Tower Construction, Steffen Body and then for R.W. Rice for 30 years, retiring in 1993.

He was a member of South Sioux City Eagle's Club. He enjoyed yard work, cars, playing cards and working in his workshop.

Survivors include his wife, Rose Kunkel of Sioux City; his children, Pamela and her husband, Dennis Ehlers, of Moville, Iowa, Janice and her husband, Evert Brown of Kansas City, Mo., Duane Kunkel and his wife, Sharon of Sioux City, Barbara and her husband, Gary Letcher of Jefferson, S.D., James Kunkel and his wife, Debbie of Sioux City, Gerald Kunkel and his wife, Jo of Sioux City, Colleen and her husband, Don Perera of Sioux City, Timothy Kunkel and his special friend, Charles Smith of Sioux City, and Dorreen Kunkel of Kansas City, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; his little buddy, Sid; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Mary Kunkel; and a sister, Ila French.
