Margaret L. Baker, 84, of Sioux City, formerly of Pierson, Iowa, died Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003, at Sunrise Retirement Home in Sioux City.

Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Nathan C. Houfek officiating. There will be a private family burial prior to the funeral in Good Hope Cemetery in Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., all at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley, Iowa.

Margaret Louise Baker was born Nov. 14, 1918, in rural Correctionville, the daughter of Fred W. and Bertha (Volkert) Hoppe. She grew up in the Correctionville area, graduating from Correctionville High School.

She married Lester Baker on Sept. 20, 1942, at Cushing, Iowa. She and Lester lived and farmed east of Pierson, Iowa. They retired from farming in 1969. They continued to live on their farm. Lester died in 1976. After his death, Margaret continued to live on the farm until 1980, when she moved to Sioux City. After moving to Sioux City, Margaret provided baby-sitting for children until she was unable to do so.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Cushing, where she was baptized and confirmed. Upon moving to Sioux City, she became a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. At St. John's Church in Cushing, Margaret was active in teaching Sunday school and was a member of the Ladies Aid. Later, at Our Savior's Church in Sioux City, she was active in various church groups especially the Singles Club.

Survivors include a son, Ken Baker and his wife, Dorothy of Sumner, Iowa; three daughters, Sue Swanson and her husband, John of Sioux City, Linda Miranda of Chicago, Ill., and Louise Hagey and her husband, Barry of Waseca, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Amy Anderson, Drew Baker, Alison Miranda, Jeffrey Miranda, Kelly Gunderson, Brenda Swanson and Terri Swanson; a brother, Frank Hoppe and his wife, Connie of Kingsley; and two sisters, Grace Linn of Harlan, Iowa, and Carol Buley and her husband, Buster of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Margaret was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jennifer Hagey.
