LaVerna Hamann dies, Sept. 5

LaVerna F. Hamann, 87, of Anthon peacefully passed into the arms of God on Saturday, Sept. 5,2009, at the Countryside Senior Living in Sioux City.

Services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 11 at St. Paul Lutheran Church at Midway, rural Battle Creek, Iowa, with the Rev. Andrew Carlson officiating. Burial was in St. Paul Cemetery at Midway. Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon was in charge of arrangements.

LaVerna Frances Butcher was born in rural Danbury, Iowa, on May 21, 1922, the daughter of Charles and Alta (Leetch) Butcher. She attended Fairfield Independent Country School until the sixth grade. Upon her family's move to a farm west of Oto, Iowa, she attended and graduated from Oto High School in 1940. On March 16, 1941, she was united in marriage to John Ernest Hamann at St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she became an active member, involved in Ladies Aid (LMWL) and teaching Sunday School. They farmed east of Anthon until retiring to Anthon, where they built their dream home in the 1980s. There, they enjoyed life together until John's death in 2003. In 2008, LaVerna moved to Countryside Senior Living.

Those left to cherish her memory are her three children, Rev. Sheryl (Brian) Ashley of Correctionville, Iowa, Bryan Hamann and his fiancee Martha Lanyon of Sioux City, and Vicky(Steve) Mead of Oto, Iowa; a daughter of the heart, Pat Hamann of Sergeant Bluff; her grandchildren, Kami (Hal) Farrington, Ken (Lisa) Ashley, Tony (Cara) Ashley, Todd Hamann, Chad (Sandra) Hamann, Wade Hamann, Teresa Mead (Dan Hightower), Brad (Jolene) Mead, and Linda Mead (Jon Peterson); 18 great grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Fitchner of Moville, Iowa, Margaret Milligan of Anthon and Margaret Hamann of Battle Creek, Iowa; and a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Alvin and Marian Rippke of Moville, Iowa.

Along with her husband, John E. Hamann, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Joan Diane; her sister and brother in law, Doris and Gerald Cameron; her brothers-in-law, Archie Milligan, Wayne Fitchner, William Hamann, and Alfred Hamann; a sister-in-law and good friend, Roberta Peterson; her parents, Charles and Alta Butcher; and her father and motherin-law, Hans and Henrietta Hamann.
