OBITUARY

Mrs. Mary Ann Hemphill nee Ebert was born in Wayne county, Ohio, Sept. 7, 1838. Died March 19, 1911, at 2 p.m. Aged 72 years, 6 months, and 12 days.

Jan. 1, 1863, she was married to Alexander Hemphill in Linn county, Iowa. To this union were born 8 children, 4 have preceded he mother in death, 4 remain who mourn a mother’s departure, namely Chancey A. Hemphill of Minneapolis, Minn., Ida E. Hemphill of Sioux City, Elmer L. of Sioux City and Samuel I. of Pierson, Iowa. Besides these she leaves a bereaved husband, one sister, three brothers, and 10 grandchildren.

Mother Hemphill was converted when a girl, and united with the Evangelical Association. She was an exemplary Christian all through her long life, in the home and abroad. The testimony of husband and children, is that they never saw her out of humor, nor impatient. This is a precious legacy that can be carried down through the hearts and lives of mourning friends. It is also a living testimony of what salvation can do for a human soul in this life. Wherever she has lived she has had many many friends, and the loved ones say that they know not of an enemy that she had. Her life was so distinctively Christian that the world and church realized in her Christ life, and took cognizance of this great fact. She had not an easy life, but it was a life of faith and trust in God. Sickness and affliction and sorrow were crowded into her experiences. Three times she was attacked by the disease that finally caused her death—pneumonia. Two children passed away in infancy, and 2 in blooming young womanhood met tragic deaths. We see her looking this way today, with the same loving patience and forbearance, as she manifested in her sojourn upon earth and becking you come this way meet me here, “Prepare to meet thy God.” This life is but the “dressing room” for Heaven, where we shall be at home with the loved ones and God; a stepping out of the mortal into the immortal—to reign with the loving God forever.

“It is not death to die—“
