MORE MOB-LAW IN IOWA
The residents in Liston Township, Woodbury County, are in a fever of excitement over a case of mob violence in which they rightly regard as very discreditable. An old woman named Helen Waite, living in that section and managing a farm, has for some reason secured the hearty displeasure of some of her neighbors, and on the night of the 8th instant a mob visited her house, in her absence, and wrought havoc. They demolished the doors and window of her house, ripped off the clapboards,
chopped to pieces all the agricultural implements about the premises, smashed up a new buggy, destroyed the stove and threw it fragments through the window, stomped the clock into a thousand pieces, took a feather bed out of the house, ripped it open and scattered the feathers about the place, burned up most of the bedding and the old woman’s wearing apparel, shot several hogs and the dog, the latter of which they put in the old woman’s bed and covered with quilts. The loss will aggregate over a thousand dollars. A thorough investigation into the outrage was in progress when the informant of the Sioux City Journal, from which we condense, left the vicinity; and it is the intention of the respectable inhabitants of that section to probe the matter to the bottom, and bring the offenders to justice. Mrs. Waite is a woman of 55 years of age. It would seem from the following notice which was tacked on her door a few days before the attack was made, that she is in possession of some damaging regarding some of her neighbors, and they wanted to get her out of the community:“NOTICE – You are hereby notified to leave this premises forthwith. You shall not stay here. If you do, other means will be tried. The stiller you keep the better it will be for you, and if you do anything you will suffer for it. There is no use. You can’t live here. This is your last notice. You will be dealt with according to are laws. CAPTAIN OF VIGILGANTES
