History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Carl and Louisa (Ebsen) Tuschoff
By Brad Smith

Carl and Louisa C Tuschoff were born in Germany. Carl was born on April 19, 1856, and Louisa was born Louisa Christine Ebsen in Schleswig, Holstein, Germany on January 18, 1867, being baptized in the Lutheran faith. Louisa’s parents were Jens and Fredarika Abbe Ebsen.

Carl immigrated to the United States in 1881 when he was twenty-five years of age. Louisa came to the United States in 1883 when she was sixteen, and settled at Walnut, Iowa. He met Carl there and later married him on February 15, 1887.

In 1894 they moved to a farm in Ida County six miles north and three quarter mile west of Ida Grove. The year of 1894 they suffered through a drought which left them with no crop whatsoever. In 1905 they moved to Woodbury County near Correctionville.

When Carl came to America, he Americanized his name from the original Kark Tuschoff. Carl retained his German citizenship while Louisa was naturalized.

Seven children were born to them. They are:

Annie, ‘Mrs. Charles Casey’, born April 3, 1888;

Minnie, ‘Mrs. Chas Reimer’, born July 26, 1890;

Mrs. Laura Blane, born October 15, 1893;

Chris, born January 1895;

Rose, ‘Mrs. Ernest Luneberg’ born June 21, 1901;

Anton, born August 31, 1898, died July 1932;

And Ethel Louise, ‘Mrs. Frank Reyman’, born December 5, 1908, died December 31, 1947.

Carl passed away on August 25, 1931.

Louisa resided at the family farm until a few years before her death, when she moved into the home of her daughter, Mrs. Minnie Reimer of Everly, Iowa. There she passed away, January 25, 1950.

They are both interred in the Correctionville Cemetery.
