Miles Sanford and Hertha Edith Palmer Strong family
By Constance L C H HawleyMiles Sanford Strong, ‘Sant’, son of James Henry Strong and Charity Adeline Bayne was born 15 June 1975 near Climbing Hill, Iowa. The Strong family immigrated from Ireland and Engalnd; the Baynes heritage was Scotland and the Isle of Jersey.
Miles S grew up with an atmosphere of great family harmony, practical jokes and lots of laughter. The strong religious direction of their mother, Charity Adeline, left a deep imprint on the entire family. Miles had eight brothers and one sister.
Miles became an auctioneer and a farmer. On May 15, 1901, he married Hertha Edith Palmer, eldest daughter of Nelson Elanson Palmer and Nancy Amelia Gillett. The Palmers and Gilletts were of English descent.
Hertha Edith was born 30 April 1882 at Oto, Iowa. The Palmer’s home was permeated with educational endeavors with emphasis on continued intellectual growth and learning.
To this couple three children were born: Wayne Palmer, born 30 January 1904, married Gladys Beckman of Hull, Iowa, died 15 April 1941 at Kingsley, Iowa; Wilma Aldys (named for her grandmother, Aldis Ladd), born 22 September 1906, married Robert Edward Carlson of Climbing Hill; Lavonne Louise, born 2 October 1911, married Milton Clark Shumate of Moville.
‘Sant and Edith’ lived in the Climbing Hill area their entire married life. Sant was a member of the Modern Woodman of America, enjoyed all sports, especially baseball, was an avid vegetable gardener, and enjoyed singing hymns.
Edith enjoyed playing the piano, especially for family sing-a-longs, traveling and cooking. Their home was the meeting place for the Strong and Palmer families.
This couple attained the remarkable accomplishment of celebrating 68 wedding anniversaries.
In September, 1965, Miles suffered a stroke and ultimately the couple moved to the Billy Sunday Retirement home in Sioux City.
On 17 January 1970, Miles Sanford Strong passed away. People of all ages were his friends, young and old alike.
On September 1971, Hertha Edith passed away.
They had four grandchildren: Constance Louise Carlson Hoag Hawley, John Sanford Strong Vining, Rita Louise Shumate Mafaffa, and Merrilyn Faith Shumate Rohner.
Miles Sanford and Hertha Edith were buried in the Westfork Cemetery, Climbing Hill, Iowa, adjoining their son, Wayne Palmer, who died in 1941.
