Noah Henry Smith
By Helen J Cole

Noah Smith was born June 28, 1891, and died February 4, 1962. His father was john W Smith, who was born in Berlin, Germany, and at the age of 16 years, his mother brought him to America. Some years later he settled in central Illinois where he met and married Clarice Hendrickson of New Holland, Illinois. There were four boys and three girls born of this marriage: Melvin, George, Calvin, Noah, Jennie, Lucinda and Evelyn. During the early years of the marriage they traveled by covered wagon to Madrid, Nebraska, where Noah was born. Some of the older boys came to Woodbury County and then the family moved here, buying a farm in Moville township, Woodbury County. John sold the farm when he became unable to farm and opened a livery barn in Bronson.

In early years Noah spent time working at several different things. At one time even tried photography, taking and developing his own pictures.

Noah met and married Violet Harriette Brown, daughter of L B Brown and Helen Brown. Noah and Violet married October 3, 1917, at Lawton, Iowa, and moved to a farm in Floyd township. They farmed for many years and then later he got interested in windmills and wells. For several years that was the occupation he had and he raised his family by doing this work. Many windmills in Woodbury County were put up by him and his six boys. With a large family, the years were difficult. Five sons served in the armed forces: Air Force, Army and Navy.
