History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Dr Edward H Sibley and family
By Dr Edward H Sibley

Dr Edward Heathcote Sibley, son of Dr Samuel E Sibley and Martha Belle Heathcote Sibley, was born in Sioux City, April 17, 1910.

His lineage is definitely English so far as can be traced. The Sibley side is discussed elsewhere. Martha Heathcote’s grandfather, John Heathcote, emigrated from England about 1821. His son, Matthew, moved to Illinois, where Martha was born September 17, 1870, Round Grove, Illinois. It may be of interest to Sioux Landers that Matthew Heathcote was married to Mercy Ann Stone in a double wedding which also united Alice Ann Heathcote and Thomas Jefferson Stone, February 8, 1849. T J Stone was a prominent Sioux City pioneer.

Martha Belle Heathcote was born September 17, 1876. She came to Moville in 1892 with her father after the death of her mother, moving all household goods on the train. They then lived with her sister, Alice, who was married to pioneer banker and farmer, W W McElrath. She married Dr Samuel E Sibley in Moville, March 31, 1896.

In Sioux City Martha Sibley entered into many activities: President of the Women’s Association of the First Congregational Church, first President of the Sioux Med-Dames (doctor’s wives organization), board member of the Florence Crittendton Home. She died March 1953.

Dr Edward H Sibley married Clara Marie Munger, June 22, 1940. Her father was Dr Francis Elbriggs Munger, dentist of Bayard and later Grinnell, Iowa. Dr Munger went to Sioux City Central High School. Miss Munger came to Sioux City after graduation from Grinnell College to work in the Sioux City Public Library, living with her uncle Judge Robert H Munger.

Her Munger line will be recorded here because no others now live in Woodbury County. The first in this country, Nicholas, born 1629, came from England at sixteen, probably with the person to whom he was apprenticed. He took the Freeman’s Oath in 1652. This oath apparently meant that the man was of age, ‘orthodox’ religion, and possessed of twenty English Pounds net worth. The whole series is: 1( Nicholas, 2( Samuel, 3( Samuel, 4( Nathaniel, 5( Ephraim, 6( Rufus, 7( Deliverance, 8* Francis E, and 9( Francis E, Jr, her father. According to the record there were a variety of occupations: miller, judge, framers, railroading, and dentist. She has one sister, Maude, Mrs. C N James, of Grinnell.

Mrs. E H Sibley has been involved in many of the organizations that Mrs. S E enjoyed: both were past presidents of the Women’s Fellowship of the First Congregational Church and of the Sioux Med-Dames; both in PEO and the Fortnightly Club, the latter a lady’s study group dating from the late 19th century.

Dr and Mrs. E H Sibley have four children, all living, as follows: Samuel Edward, born May 5, 1941, married Cameron Mead, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mead of Evanston, Illinois, July 20, 1969. Daughters Carrie Louise, born September 5, 1971, and Kathryn Ann, born March 8, 1975.

Edward Munger, born May 10, 1942, married Jane Annette Shrader, daughter of Frank and Dorothy McNabb Shrader of Sioux City, August 5, 1972, daughter Laura Jane, born February 20, 1982.

William Francis, born September 5, 1947, married Cora Francine Howard, July 7, 1970, daughter of Alfred Parkes and Francine (Froberg) Howard of Sioux City.

Thomas Quinton, born May 19, 1951, married Cynthia Witman, daughter of Harold and Carole Witman, then of Chicago, July 2, 1977.

Dr Sibley was educated in the Sioux City Public Schools, at Morningside College (BA), and at the John Hopkins University (MD).

He returned to Sioux City in 1938 to join his father and Dr A Q Johnson in practice. Over the years, the association changed: on the death of Dr S E Sibley, a partnership was formed with Dr Johnson; when Dr Johnson’s son, Dr Charles A, finished his medical education and surgical training, he joined the partnership. The association was continued after the death of Dr A Q, and in a few years they were joined by Dr Anthony H Kelly, another Sioux Cityan. It was a short while until the three added, Dr Stuart Leafstedt (Alcester, South Dakota), and then the partnership was transformed into Surgical Consultants, PC, a professional corporation. At the time of Dr Sibley’s retirement, January 1, 1980, the group included Drs Sibley, Kelly, Johnson, Leafstedt, Dr Larry D Foster, and Dr Alf Jordan. For the first several years, Dr Sibley was president of Surgical Consultants.

Other presidencies he had in connection with medical practice were: Methodist Hospital Medical Staff, Sioux Valley Medical Association, Woodbury Medical Association, and the Plaza Professional Center. The latter organization then owned and operated the medical and dental office complex at 2900 Hamilton Blvd.

Dr Sibley’s civic activities included presidencies of the Family Service, Sergeant Floyd Council (Boy Scouts of America), and the Siouxland United Way. Much board participation included sixteen years service with Morningside College.
