By Loraine E WashburnJesse Richard ‘Bud’ Washburn was born 12 September 1929 in Hancock Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the only one of the seven children of Jesse and Elsie (McKnight) Washburn not born in Woodbury County. His elementary school years were spent in Woodbury County while living on farms near Hornick and Anthon. He then helped his father on the farm until his married to Helen W Short, after which he was employed as a farm hand on farms near Anthon, Kingsley, Pierson, Ocheyedan and Lawton, Iowa. In 1959 they rented a farm in Section 34 of Concord Township, Woodbury County on ‘Old Highway 20’, at which time they purchased a home in Sioux City, Iowa. For most of the years that Bud was farming, he also was employed at North American Manufacturing as a machinist. This plant is also located in Section 34, but on the new Highway 20. At present, Bud is working on a farm near Homer, Nebraska, commuting from Sioux City.
Helen W Short was born 7 November 1925, the daughter of Walter and Viola (Dicus) Short. Before her marriage she was a rural school teacher. After her marriage she was a full time homemaker.
Bud and Helen are parents of six children, all graduates of Lawton-Bronson Schools. Larry Arthur, born 18 December 1944 at Anthon, Iowa, lives in South Sioux City, Nebraska, and was employed for many year at Sioux Tools in Sioux City. He married the second time, 16 June 1973, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Arlowene Ann Marple, born 3 December 1951, at Akron, Iowa. She graduated form South Sioux City High School and later in 1972 from Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City. She is a secretary. Larry had one son by a former marriage, Anthony Arthur, 1966, Sioux City, and two sons of his second marriage, Jerrid Alan, 1976, Sioux City, and Justin Eugene, 1978, Sioux City.
Ronald Duane, born 13 April 1949, Ocheyedan, Iowa, graduated in 1967. He served in the Marine Corps after graduation at Camp LeJune, North Carolina and on a Mediterranean Training Cruse. Following his discharged he began working at Western Iowa Telephone Company at Lawton, Iowa, and is currently their Construction Foreman. He was married 28 December 1972, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Patricia Louise ‘Pat’ Groetken. She is a registered nurse at Marian Health Center, Sioux City, Iowa. Ron is a member of the Lawton Volunteer Fire Department; Pat is a member of its Auxiliary. Both are members of the Lawton Rescue Squad. They are members of the Presbyterian Church at Lawton. They are parents of four sons, all born in Sioux City: Matthew Ronald, 1973; Jeffrey Allan, 1975; Rick Edward, 1977; and Mitchell Andrew, 1978. In about 1977, they bought a home at 110 E Maple in Lawton, where they still reside.
Daniel Richard, born 21 October 1951 at Kingsley, Iowa, graduated from high school in 1969 as a State of Iowa Scholar and a semi-finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program. He earned a degree in science at Morningside College in 1973, and since 1976 has been teaching Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science at Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. He is also active in the Sergeant Bluff Community Theater. He was married on 14 August 1971 in Sioux City to Vickie Lynn Solomon. She was born 18 April 1952, a daughter of Charles and Frances (Andrews) Solomon, long time Woodbury County farmers. Vickie graduated from Lawton-Bronson in 1970. She is a homemaker. Dan and Vickie live in Sergeant Bluff. They are parents of four children, all born in Sioux City; David Richard, 1972; Amy Michelle, 1974; Nicholas Ryan, 1978; and Lindsey, 1982.
Bonnie Irene was born 5 August 1955 in Sioux City. A 1972 graduated of Lawton-Bronson with an achievement award in English and a letter of recommendation from National Merit Scholarship Corporation. She was named in Who’s Who in American High Schools. She graduated magna cum laude form Morningside College in 1977 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, a double major in English and Music. She is an English, Speech and Drama teacher at Mallard, Iowa, to Chad Edward Powers, currently a college student, and a talented guitarist and country western vocalist. They are parents of one child, Amanda Sue, 1981, Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Randal Jesse, born 24 January 1959 in Sioux City, graduated from Lawton-Bronson in 1977. He had participated in football, vocal music and played percussion in band. He was awarded a scholarship in music to Morningside College, and he and his wife both received their Bachelor of Music degrees in 1981. He was initiated into Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia men’s national professional music fraternity. Randy married 16 May 1981 at Hinton, Iowa, to Donna Rae Pinkerton, daughter of Mr and Mrs Neal Pinkerton of Hinton. Randy is the instrumental music instructor at Manilla, Iowa, and Donna is the vocal music instructor at Irwin, Iowa. Thy are members of a Country-Rock dance band. They reside at Manilla, Iowa.
Leanna Mae was born 27 February 1962, Sioux City, Iowa. She graduated form Lawton-Bronson in 1980, earning the National Choral Award and the John Phillip Sousa Band Award, and auditioned for and won a scholarship to Morningside College where she will earn her Bachelor of Music degree in 1984. She is a talented pianist and vocalist. When she gets her degree she will be fourth of Bud and Helen’s children to have done so at Morningside College in Sioux City.
