History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

A A Sadler
By Mrs. Max Flathers

Amasa A Sadler was born in Clinton County, Iowa, November 14, 1858, the eldest son of Joseph and Nackey Ellen Woods Sadler. He died January 13, 1928. He was united in marriage to Nancy Whitsell, daughter of Peter and Christian Whitsell, on November 14, 1877.

In the fall of 1880 they came to Woodbury County, Iowa, to a farm in Wolfcreek Twp, Section 3, a mile west of Rock Branch. They had been there just a short time when the terrible blizzard of 1880 came in October and stayed all winter.

The nearest connection by train form Eastern Iowa was Battle Creek or Rodney, Iowa. From there they would travel by team or horseback; some walked out from the train.

Mr. and Mrs. Sadler were both charter members of the Rock Branch Methodist Church, which was organized in 1887. They were always interested in the church and took part in all its activities. They took great pride in their home and farm, and were always interested in the advancement of the community.

Five children were born to this couple:

Rosa Belle, 1879-1957, married John Wilcox in 1898; he died in 1902. One child, Cecil, was born 1899, died 1940. She married Robert Harrison in 1905 and had one child, Robert Ferroll who died in 1980.

Ray R, 1886-1953, married Emma Will in 1929.

Mary L, 1889-1975, married Dan Cooper, in 1915. Their children were Vernon, Alice, Carrol and Marvin.

Jesse J, 1891-1945, married Minnie Huffman in 1915 and had one child, Evelyn.

Flossie Whitsell, 1894-1974, married Emery P Klingensmith in 1915; they had two children, Vera and Paul.
