Resseguie (Ressegieu) Family

The lineage of the Resseguie (Ressegieu) family in the United States: Alexandre de Resseguier from Trescleoux, in Dauphiny, France was the father of Alexander Resseguie.

Alexander Resseguie, son of Alexandre de Resseguier, was born in 1685 in Toulouse in southern France. Alexander came to Norwalk, Connecticut, as a Huguenot refugee in 1709. He married Sara Bontecou in October, 1709. He died in October, 1752.

Abraham Resseguie, son of Alexander Resseguie, was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut, on July 17, 1715.

John Resseguie, son of Abraham Resseguie, was born in Ridgefield, Connecticut, on April 2, 1758 and died at Sharon, New York, on May 9, 1840. He married Abigail Brailey on January 17, 1789. She was born May 16, 1754, and died June 28, 1808. John served for three years in the Revolutionary War. Abigail was his second wife and mother of his six children.

John Resseguie, son of John Resseguie I, was the one who changed the spelling to Ressegieu. He was born in Connecticut, May 17, 1793, and died in Sharon, New York, on September 10, 1856. John married Eve Anthony at Sharon, New York in 1819.

Dr Jacob Anthony Ressegieu, son of Resseguie, later changed to Ressegieu, was born September 2, 1822. He was the second child in a family of eleven. Jacob married Lydia Kilts. Their children who lived in Sioux City included: Harriett (Mrs Stephen Hathaway), Arabella (Mrs Linus Skinner), Fred H Ressegieu, Frank D Ressegieu, Winfield Scott Ressegieu, and Edwin John Ressegieu.

Edwin John Ressegieu, son of Dr Jacob Anthony Ressegieu, was born on September 26, 1849, in Earlville, New York. At Sioux City in 1871, he married Johanna O’Rielly, who was born on July 12, 1850, in Smith Falls, Canada. Edwin died on June 23, 1916, and Johanna died on January 27, 1918, both in Sioux City. They are buried in Floyd Cemetery.

Earl Judson Ressegieu, son of Edwin John Ressegieu, the sixth of nine children, was born in Sioux City on October 21, 1885. At Sioux City on April 26, 1911, he married Johanna Catherine O’Keefe, who was born on July 8, 1886, in Storm Lake, Iowa.

The last surviving member of Edwin John’s family, Charlotte Eva, was born August 9, 1893, and she married Albert Chilson on April 7, 1915, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She still resides in Sioux City.

We are among the 141 descendants of Edwin John Ressegieu who now live from coast to coast. Margaret ‘Peggy’ Fachman Loots, granddaughter of Earl Judson Ressegieu, now lives in Norwalk, Connecticut where the history of the Ressegieu family in America all began.
