Plumer Family

Henry F Plumer and Sophie Kinnig Plumer, Dumphries, Iowa, where the parents of Cornelius Joseph Plumer, born April 8, 1868. Cornelius had four sisters and seven brothers. They were Josephine, Emeline, Louie, Mary, Edward, Bill, John, Oscar, Henry, Tom and G/Ferdinand.

Henry F Plumer acquired part of the East half of Section 17 in Banner Township in 1882, and another portion in 1890. This farm has remained in the family throughout the years.

On March 17, 1897, Cornelius married Emilie Burmeister, born October 5, 1872, and they settled on the farm in Banner Township. They had a family of three children: Clarence Anton, born January 16, 1897; Friedrich August, born May 17, 1898; and Marie Emeline, born December 21, 1899. Marie devoted her life to the teaching profession. She died August 27, 1942, at the age of forty-two.

On December 17, 1919, Clarence married Viola Gladys Bornholtz, born December 12, 1901. Friedrich and Clarence formed a partnership and farmed their father’s land along with the East half of Section 20 of Banner Township, which they later purchased. Friedrich always remained single. Clarence and Gladys had a family of three daughters and one son. They are: Evelyn Jean, born November 3, 1920; Margie Bernice, born August 19, 1922; Robert Glen, born June 14, 1924; and Joyce Elaine, born March 5, 1926.

Clarence’s oldest daughter, Evelyn, married Ernest Maack, November 23, 1938. They farmed in Plymouth County in the Hinton area. They have three children: Pauline, Lanny and Lynn. Ernest died September 13, 1979; and Evelyn died October 31, 1982.

Margie married William Raymond Guthridge, November 25, 1945. He spent his adult lifetime working as a lineman and line superintendent for the Woodbury County Rural Electric Coop, with the exception of the three years in the South Pacific in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. They have four children, Cindy, Greg, Cristy and Stuart.

Joyce married Chauncey Davidson, May 11, 1944. Chauncey has been involved primarily in farming and farm-related enterprises. They have one son, Randy.

Robert married Arlene Stusse, June 12, 1949. They settled on a farm in Plymouth County, but moved back t the home place in Banner Township when Clarence and Gladys retired in 1952 and moved to Moville due to poor health. They have three children, Dianne, Julie and Kevin.

Clarence died August 1, 1957. Gladys resides in the Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City. Robert acquired ownership of the home place in 1981 and is continuing to farm.
