History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Randall Pease
By Gary Pease

My great-grandfather on my mother’s side was born in Denmark and came to the United States in 1857. He was born on October 12, 1844, and died on February 16, 1932. He made the journey across the United States with a group of people who were members of the Utah Church (Mormons) and decided to settle in southwest Iowa. He was self-educated and became a minister.

My great-grandmother on my mother’s side was born in Llanelly Carmarthenshere, South Wales, on March 23, 1850.

One of the children born to this couple was Arthur Hansen. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on January 18, 1876. Arthur farmed near Percival and Persia, Iowa, and later became a building contractor. He moved to Modale, Iowa in 1919 and remained there the rest of his life.

He married Edna Fensler and they had three daughters and one son. Edna was born on June 12, 1882. One of the daughters was Blanche Comelia, born on March 9, 1907. Blanche worked in a general store for many years to help support the family after her mother was killed as a result of injuries received when the car she was riding in was hit by a train in very thick fog. Edna died on November 30, 1920.

Arthur married on January 27, 1926, to Nettie Cutler Bourn. Arthur died on December 18, 1952, and Nettie died on August 5, 1965.

My great-grandfather and great-grandmother on my father’s side were married in Kendall County, Illinois in 1861. Randall Pease was a farmer and purchased 160 acres of land in Cherokee County, Iowa, in 1880. He died in 1887, leaving his widow to raise six children. She lived out the rest of her years on this farm and died in 1921 at the age of 83. One of the sons born to this couple was Herve Pease.

Norman Herve ‘Herb’ Pease was born on October 19, 1863, near Newark, Illinois. He came to Iowa with his parents, brothers and sisters in 1881. On October 18, 1900, he married Maude Edna Horton. She was born in Minneapolis on December 27, 1879. They moved to Pierson, Iowa, in 1903 and lived a house, Herve built for more than 50 years. Herve died in 1954, and Maude died in 1955.

Their only son, Randall Charles, was born on July 30, 1901. He graduated from Pierson High School and attended National Business Training School in Sioux City, Iowa. He learned telegraphy and worked for the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad for 46 years. He married Blanche C Hansen on October 26, 1929. They moved to Sergeant Bluff in 1940 and remained there for the remainder of their lives. My father, Randall, died on July 21, 1972, and my mother, Blanche, died on April 12, 1982.

Two sons were born of this union: Dr Norman F Pease of Bloomfield, New Jersey, is a member of the Bloomfield College faculty and of Fairleigh-Dickinson University at Teaneck, New Jersey. Norman was born on August 18, 1932. He was graduated from Sergeant Bluff High School and received his B A degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and a M A degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, a Master of Divinity from Garrett Biblical Institute in Evanston, and an Ed. D from Columbia University in New York City.

Gary L Pease of Cedar Falls, Iowa, was born on September 17, 1940. He graduated from Seargent-Luton High School and received his B A degree from University of Cedar Falls. He has done graduate work at Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota, Drake University in Des Moines, and at the University of Northern Iowa. He teaches Instrumental Music. He married Annette Gelhause of Hubbard, Iowa, on December 27, 1970. They adopted a child from Korea, born March 3, 1981. She arrived in the U S, September 30, 1983.
