Amanda Ostrand was born in Sweden on April 16, 1866. She lived there with her parents until coming to America in 1887 when she was 21. She had two sisters: Mrs. Martin ‘Benjamina’ Boman, who then lived in Chamberlain, South Dakota; and Bertha, Mrs. Nels Andreen. They lived in Sioux City. Nels was carpenter. One sister and two brothers remained in Sweden.

Upon coming to America, Amanda spent the first year in Dakota with her sister, Benjamina and family, coming the following year to her sister, Bertha’s, and brother-in-law, Nels Andreen’s home. Here she found employment in the Henry J Taylor home where she worked till 1893. She and Robert Hegstrom were married in that year at Augusta Swedish Lutheran Church in Sioux City and moved to his farm at Climbing Hill.
