Betty May Harrison was born 15 September1931 at Smith’s Mill, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, the daughter of William and Emma (Wulf) Harrison. By 1932 the family had moved to Woodbury County and Betty attended school at Banner No. 1 and 2, and Lawton High School, where she was valedictorian of the Class of 1950. After graduation she was employed at Martin’s Department Store in Sioux City.

Betty was married 21 September 1952 at Bethel Lutheran Church at Lawton, Iowa, to LeRoy John Held, from Hinton, Iowa. Except for two years at Storm Lake, Iowa, the couple has resided in Sioux City.

Betty was employed for many years at Younkers Department Store in Sioux City, until the summer of 1983. At present she is at home, and pursuing her avocation of breeding and raising purebred Persian cats. LeRoy was born 27 October 1930, the son of John Andrew and Martha (Sparr) Held who worked for several years for Swift and Company of Sioux City, and from about 1957 he has been employed by Johnson Biscuit Company, formerly of Sioux City, now known as Interbake Foods and located in North Sioux City, South Dakota. LeRoy was a member of the Iowa National Guard for eight years.

Betty and LeRoy are members of the Lutheran Church.

Betty and LeRoy are parents of two children. Denese Lynn was born 15 September 1953. Having a condition known as Spina Bifida, she has been confined to a wheelchair most of her life. In spite of her handicap, she completed her high school at Riverside in Sioux City near the top of her class, and has earned a double masters degree at University of Iowa, while working there as a counselor of the handicapped. Due to illness she resided in Sioux City with her parents for most of 1983, but plans to return to Iowa City, which she considers her home. David LeRoy was born 11 November 1955 at Sioux City. He attended Sioux City Schools until his senior year, transferred to Lawton-Bronson in his senior year and graduated there in 1973. He worked briefly at a variety of jobs until 1975 when he began traveling with a carnival. This he has continued since. He was married 18 September 1982 at Elk Point, South Dakota to Jacqueline Anne Powszedney who was born in Canada in about 1964. Jacque is also a carnival employee.
