Our Murphy family originated in County Cork, Ireland. Patrick R Murphy was born March 17, 1816, in the parish of Desertmore, town of Crookawoumore. He was left an orphan when very young and soon thereafter, with an older brother and friends, emigrated to America, settling in Northumberland, New Brunswick, Canada. He worked in a shipyard there, as his family before may have done, living in a seaport district. Later, he married Miss Catherine Mahoney, born April 12, 1820, in County Cork, Ireland, parish of Kilereg, who was the daughter of the shipyard owner. They were married according to the rite of the Catholic by the missionary, Michael Egan, on December 1, 1838. It was registered in Vol 1 page 493 No. 2107. Witnesses were Peter Desmond and Mary Mahoney. Ten children were born of this union.

A( John J Murphy, born November 3, 1839, in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada. He married twice; there were no children. He died in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

B( Dennis H Murphy, born March 9, 1840, in Chatham, New Brunswick, Canada.

C( James Murphy, born April 11, 1844, in Chatham. Died April 14, 1865, in Virginia in the Battle of the Wilderness during the Civil War.

D( Daniel Murphy, born February 14, 1846, in Chatham. Died November 26, 1933, in Greene, Iowa. He married Anna McCarthy and they had five children; the names of three are known; Emma is single; Alice married G A Leonard; and Lewis married Edith Berry, and they had two children: Keith and Lois. Keith Murphy, son of Lewis, married Marcella Hagerty; they had ten children: 1( Mary Lou, single, a teacher at Greene, Iowa. 2( Jo Ann, single, lives at Mason City, Iowa. 3( Shawn, married to John Wagoner; they live at Davenport, Iowa and have three children: Johnny, David and Carolyn. 4( Sheila, single, is a registered nurse in VA Hospital in Phoenix, Arizona. 5( Diane, married to David Schulte; they live at Inver Grove Heights, Minesota. She is a home economist with three children: Maureen, Tonya, and Chrissy. 6( Dennis is a single farmer. 7( Marcele, married Robert A Smith (deceased); she is a nurse; their children are Brad, Renee and Matt. 8( Jolene, home economist, married Steve Ellenbacker and lives at Sauk Rapids, Minnesota. 9( Marilyn, secretary, married Collin Ochetree; they have one son, Jason. 10( Lois, married John E Meek; they have no children.

E( Patrick Frank Murphy, born January 12, 1848, in Chatham, N.B. Canada, died October 15, 1909, in Kansas City, Kansas. (Twin of Jeremiah ‘Joe’.)

G( Charles W Patrick, born January 9, 1852, in Chatham, N.B. Canada, died May 15, 1941, in Evansville, Wisconsin.

H( Ella J Murphy, born October 19, 1853, in Wisconsin; burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

I( Henry F Murphy, born January 1, 1856, in Davis County, Wisconsin; died October 26, 1937, in Greene County.

J( Mary Ann ‘Jane’ Murphy, born December 25, 1858, in Wisconsin, died in Ravenswood, Illinois, near Chicago. She was single.

Patrick and Catherine moved to southern Wisconsin, where he farmed up to his death. His obituary stated that ‘he reared a large and useful family, all of whom are a credit to him. He was an honest, upright and industrious citizen, well known and much respected. He was eighty-five at his death, near Butts Corners, on Friday evening, December 28, 1900, of old age and a general breakdown from hard work.’ Patrick was buried in the Catholic Cemetery, near Fulton, Wisconsin.

Catherine died February 9, 1895, of pneumonia. She had migrated to Canada at age fourteen and married Patrick on June 2, 1837, by law and later in Church on December 1, 1838, by a missionary of the Jesuits. Her obituary stated ‘she was well known. Her obituary stated ‘she was well known, loved, respected by all, faithful wife, pious and exemplary mother, possession a high Christian character.’ She is buried in the same Catholic Cemetery in Evansville, Wisconsin.

Dennis H Murphy, second child of Patrick and Catherine, married Olive Burch, born September 21, 1858, Illinois, daughter of Henry Burch and Eliza Jones. To them were born three sons and three daughters.

A( William Harvey, born 1870, died in Sioux City, Iowa, on February 21, 1902.

B( Perry Charles, born March 16, 1871, in Sioux City, Iowa, died in November 1936.

C( Johnny, drowned in the Missouri River at the age of 6, while trying out new boots on the ice-covered river. Mother, Olive, kept a vigil on the river bank, but his body was never recovered.

D( Nell-Helen Josephine, born June 9, 1873, was married November 25, 1892, to Robert Francis Bartlett, born 1859, died 1936. They had one son, Edward Clayton Bartlett, born June 24, 1902, in Sioux City. He married Julie M Spear, born December 19, 1909, in London, England, on January 27, 1935. Their five children were born in Martinez, California: 1( Robert Francis, born September 24, 1937; 2( Mary Sheila, born October 15, 1940; 3( Carole Elizabeth, born May 30, 1943; 4( Michael Edward, born December 22, 1947; 5( Peter Thomas, born September 8, 1950.

E( Kathryn, born January 12, 1876, died August 17, 1944 in Seattle, Washington. She married William Frerichs; they had no children.

F( Estelle, born 1883, died 192? She married Dr William White. After his death, she married Harry Mullen; they had one child, William. She attended Morningside College in 1902-03.

Dennis H Murphy came to Sioux City from Wisconsin in the 1860’s to seek work as a carpenter, as it was a river city and he had learned ship’s carpentry. He and Olive lived in a house on the north side of West Fourth St, between Sioux Street and Main Street, is an early day Irish settlement. There their children were born. Later he obtained work, as a carpenter, at a packing plant, so moved to an Irish housing settlement on South Howard Street. After his wife died on October 2, 1907, he lived with his daughter, Stella, at 1106 Virginia Street. She was a school teacher at Dwight School, on the northwest corner of 7th and Wall Streets. She also taught at Hawthorne School in 1905-06. At that time, daughter, Kathryn, lived at 1319 Pierce Street.

During this time, Dennis helped his son, Perry Charles, build a home at 3200 6th Avenue and South Cecelia Street. That home is still standing and to date, only Murphys have every lived in it. After building that house, Dennis went to live with his daughter, Kathryn, who had moved to Seattle, Washington. He died there February 6, 1927, at age 87. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery, in Seattle, Washington.

Perry Charles Murphy was married December 24, 1894, to Susan Elizabeth Benton, born October 10, 1874, daughter of frank Benton and Susan Smith of Union County, South Dakota. She had three brothers: Fred, Walter, and Frank; and three sisters: Edna Falls, Genevieve Udell and Lillian Lennon. To this union two sons were born; they lived and died in Sioux City. 1( Raymond Perry was born September 21, 1896, and died March 31, 1941. 2( William Harvey was born October 31, 1899, and died September 26, 1962.

Perry was a laborer until being appointed to the Sioux City Fire Department on August 29, 1903. He was elevated to the rank of Captain on August 27, 1917. He served at the Morningside station, when it was first built in the fall of 1917. ‘The Architectural View’ book, put out by the Sioux City Art Center, which pictures the station, was worked on by Perry’s great-great-great granddaughter, Linda Thompson, from East High School. Perry also served many years at Station No. 3 at 5th and Wall Streets (Floyd Blvd). He had been retired five years at the time of death from cancer, in November 1936, at age 65. Susan Elizabeth Benton Murphy died in September 1948 and they are buried in Graceland Cemetery.

Raymond Perry married Mabel Estelle Willson on April 1, 1916, in Sioux City. She was a daughter of Edward Ulysses Willson and Mary Wieten Willson. She was born June 24, 1896 in Sheldon, Iowa. She died December 4, 1972, in Sioux City and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Sioux City.

To them were born seven children, all in the home at 3210 6th Avenue, Sioux City. 1( Mary Suzanne, born January 24, 1917. 2( Laura Jane, born October 10, 1918. She died December 10, 1918 in the flu epidemic. 3( Charles Ray Joseph, born October 3, 1920. 4( James Francis, born November 11, 1922; he died of pneumonia, December 21, 1931. 5( Daniel Joseph, born May 24, 1924. He died November8, 1974 of cancer. 6( Edward Harvey, born February 4, 1926. 7( Reginald William, born August 11, 1927. Ray and Mabel were divorced January 10, 1930.

Ray married Rosalia Simeon Scott, January 20, 1930. They had two children: Rita Rae, born 1935, and Dennis Perry, born November 3, 1938.

Ray was, at first , a laborer at a packing plant and was later appointed to the Sioux City Fire Department in 1917, serving at Nos. 3 and 5 and 1. Being interested in very early day radio, he made a receiving and sending set, in his home on 6th Avenue, in the early 1920’s. He broadcast to a fellow fireman, Bob Skelton, in east Morningside, who also had a like set. Later, Ray broadcast from a remote control station, KWUC in the West Hotel in Sioux City, out of LeMars, Iowa, owned and operated by Rex Frolke. He did this on his time off from the Fire Department. He also had a radio parts business, in the old Iowa Building on the southwest corner of 5th and Pierce Streets.

When Sioux City was to get its first radio station, Ray applied to do broadcasting, and started at KSCJ when they first went on the air. Over the years, he served in many capacities at the station. He was ‘The Town Crier’ from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., Monday through Friday, did the sportscast in the evening news, and was instrumental in the return of Western League baseball to Sioux City and led the parade with three of his sons, Daniel, Edward, and Rex. He announced the Yellow Dog Auction from the Martin Hotel lobby at Christmas time. He also rode the Indy 500 race track, with a three-time champion, Wilbur Shaw, plus, was a master of ceremonies for all of the radio special events, along with Rodney Dean. Ray died of lung cancer at age forty-five on March 31, 1941, and is buried in Graceland Cemetery.

William Harvey Murphy married Vina Wallen, June 10, 1920; they divorced. He then married Marie White; they had one daughter, Marlene, who married Leonard Schultz, and are living in Phoenix, Arizona. He later married Dorothy Rider, born March 22, 1915, on September 18, 1939. They had one son, William Harvey, Jr, born January 27, 1944, and married to Judy Kay Spinkelink on August 13, 1966. They have three daughters, Shannon, born Novmeber 5, 1973; Erin, born August 5, 1976; Allison, born March 5, 1979; and one son, Ryan, born April 2, 1982.

Harvey worked in the FBI fingerprint division, during World War II and was also a long time men’s clothing salesman for Morey’s, Raymond’s and Grayson’s. He died of lung cancer and was buried at Graceland Cemetery.

The children of Ray and Mabel Murphy are as follows:

A( Mary Suzanne Murphy was married on August 1, 1937 to Alford Wayne Thompson, born December 19, 1915, died April 30, 1979. There were five sons and two daughters born to them, 1( Michael Wayne, born March 29, 1938; 2( Barbara Colleen, born October 1, 1939; 3( Joseph Jerome, born July 17, 1942; 4( Edward James, born September 30, 1943; 5( Robert Charles, born May 11, 1946; 6( Thomas Paul, born April 20, 1949; and 7( Mary Suzanne, born April 30, 1953. 1( Michael Wayne Thompson, married and divorced three times. His children are: Shelly Joy, born June 12, 1960; Scott Wayne, born June 19, 1961; Debbie, born May 10, 196?; Mark, born August 29, 1971; and Laura June, born June 1980. 2( Barbara Colleen Thompson, married Claude Howard Jennings, born November 9, 1938, divorced in 1978. Their five children are: Laurie Kathleen, born March 27, 1959, married to and divorced from Patrick Delperdang, one child, Nikole Mae, born April 18, 1976; Lisa Colleen, born July 20, 1961, married Todd Brian Heck on August 29, 1981; Steven Roy, born October 29, 1963; Matthew Claude, born April 12, 1969; and Lynda Eileen, born April 9, 1970. 3( Joseph Jerome Thompson, Sr, married on October 7, 1962, to Joyce Frazee, born May 7, 1946. Their children: 1( Joseph Jerome, Jr was born June 25, 1963, married Kristine Schneider, born January 23, 196?, on May 7, 1982. A son, Joseph Jerome, III, born October 19, 1982. 2( Jon Walter, born October 17, 1965. 4( Edward James Thompson married Maureen Kuklentz on September 29, 1963; they are divorced. The children: 1( Linda Marie, born August 25, 1964; 2( James Edward, born June 6, 1967; 3( Julie Ann, born March 19, 1969; and 4( Angela Sue, born May 19, 1976. 5( Robert Charles Thompson was married June 4, 1965, to Shirley Faye Adams, born April 3, 1947. The children 1( Charles Robert, born March 14, 1966; and 2( Christina Marie, born May 9, 1968. 6( Thomas Paul Thompson, married Pamela Hutchinson, June 24, 1967; they are divorced. The children: 1( Tami Jo, born December 13, 1967 (13th grandchild) and 2( Samantha Janelle, born January 3, 1971. On April 1, 1977, he married Elaine Hill Maurer, born July 22, 1948. 7( Mary Suzanne (Jr) married May 19, 1972, to David Bruce Hansen, born August 19, 1947. Children: 1( Katharine Rose, born November 3, 1972 and 2( Heather Marie, born January 30, 1976.

B( Charles Ray Murphy was married June 24, 1946 to Theresa Saccony, born April 15, 1924. 1( Michael James, born March 30, 1947, married Linda Clay, divorced; the children: 1( Michael James, born June 15, 1966; 2( Dawn Marie, born December 16, 1967; and 3( Laura Christine, born August 10, 1969. On March 19, 1977, he married Rita Sunderman, born February 2, 1950, who mothers his children. 2( Shannon Cecelia, born January 21, 1949 is single. 3( Timothy Patrick, born September 21, 1951, married Laurie Gajewski, divorced; a son, Timothy John, May 23, 1972. 4( Daniel Jerome, born March 9, 1955, married June 30, 1979, to Debbie Mitchell, born May 23, 1957. They have a son, Daniel Joseph, born February 16, 1982. 5( John Perry, born October 6, 1958, married Roxanne Matthews, born December 17, 1958. Their two children: 1( Chasidy Marie, born July 11, 1978; 2( Katie May, born August 1, 1981. 6( Mary Ann Therese, born April 11, 1962, is single.

Charles Murphy did the Murphy family proud, during his military life, especially at the time of World War II. At a siege in Italy, the officers of Sgt Murphy’s Company became casualties and he took command. For this, he was promoted to second Lieutenant, as approved by General Mark Clark and awarded the Silver Star medal, in April 1945. He retired form service at the rank of Lt Colonel and lives in Sioux City, Iowa.

C( Daniel Joseph Murphy, carried September 24, 1945 to Margaret De Jong, born December 24, 1911. They divorced; the children: 1( Katherine, born March 23, 1947, married Ronald Hill on April 1, 1963, three children: Brian, born September 19, 1963; Rhonda, born March 30, 1965; and Ronald, Jr. Rhonda, born March 30, 1965; and Ronald, Jr, born November 3, 1967. 2( Grace Ann Bench, born October 24, 1948, one child, Holly born January 31, 1968. Daniel served in the U S Army and also the British Cammandos during World War II. He died of cancer and is buried in the veteran’s cemetery in Rockford, Illinois.

D( Edward Harvey Murphy married Doris Hess on May 17, 1947. They’re divorced. They have three children: 1( James Edward, born January 2, 1948; 2( Jean Marie, born February 27, 1949; and 3( Mark Franklin, born December 15, 1964. Edward served in the Marines during World War II and now is a chiropractor in Seattle, Washington.

E( Reginald William Murphy ‘Rex’ in May 1948, married Laura Jane Delaney, born June 3, 1928. There are seven children: 1( Jeffrey John, born December 14, 1948; 2( Christine Marie, born May 2, 1950, married Daniel Freeman, born December 25, 1950. They have three children: Jason Matthew, born February 12, 1971, in Reno, Nevada; Jennifer June, born January 18, 1973, in Reno, Nevada; and Anna Marie born July 13, 1974, in Walnut Creek, California; 3( Rex Michael, born July 18, 1951, died April 1977. 4( Charles Richard, born September 5, 1952. 5( Mary Margaret, born October 28, 1954, has a child, Amy ‘Maggie’ born July 10, 1976. 6( Joseph Daniel, born November 13, 1955, wife – Melanie, born January 29, 1960; their children: Mindy, born November 24, 1979, and Trissa, born February 28, 1981. 7( Katie June, born October 29, 1969, married Mark Joseph Nelson, born February 11, 1955, and has two children: Anthony Joseph, born February 1, 1980 and Matthew, born December 17, 1981.

Rex served in the Navy Seabees, and also the Army during World War II. He has been in radio, like his father, and television, starting in Sioux City at Channel 9. He moved to the San Francisco area, for that work, several years.
