Biography: ELLIOTT WARREN RICE
Rice, Elliott W., brigadier-general, was born in Pittsburg, Pa., Nov. 16, 1835. He moved to Ohio with his parents, was graduated at the University of Ohio, was admitted to the bar in 1856, and practiced in Oskaloosa, Ia. At the beginning of the Civil war he enlisted as a private in the 7th Iowa volunteers, rose to be major in Aug., 1861, colonel, April 7, 1862, and on June 20, 1864, was commissioned brigadiergeneral of volunteers. He first met the Confederates at Belmont, Mo., Nov. 7, 1861, and afterwards commanded his regiment at Shiloh and Corinth, and in all the important battles of the southwest. He commanded a brigade and for a time the 2nd division of the 16th army corps in the Atlanta campaign, a brigade in Corse's division during Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas, and on March 13, 1865, was brevetted major-general of volunteers for gallant and distinguished services during the war. He was honorably mustered out in Aug., 1865, and resumed his law practice in Oskaloosa, afterward moving to Sioux City. He died in Sioux City, Ia., June 22, 1887.
