Opal Blanche Ellis
By Opal Blanche Ellis

Opal Blanche Ellis was the first born child of Katie and Jesse Ellis. She was born on the first anniversary of her parent’s marriage. Her birth occurred on a farm eight miles west of Anthon, known as the Pete Coyne place. The first eight years of her life she lived there. She attended Center School, and her first teacher was Blanche Hanner.

The family then moved to a small farm three northwest of Oto. They lived there for two years and she attended Grubb School. Lulu Howard/Howdard was her teacher. They moved several times, but always around Oto, where she lived her first nineteen years. She graduated from Oto High School in 1929. She lived at home for many years and helped out on the farm. She worked several places.

When they moved to Sioux City in 1944, she started working at the Sioux City Battery until the factory closed in 1956.

She still has a Sioux City address, wehre she has lived the past thirty-eight years. She says, ‘I love the country life. I enjoy God’s creation’.

She retired in 1981 because of ill health.

Of her religion, she is devout. She says, ‘I attended Peiro-Bethel Methodist Church as an infant. At the age of fifteen I accepted Christ as my Savior, which is the most important thing in my life. It insures me a home in Heaven. God has been good to me down through the years’. ‘But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness: and all these things shall be added unto you.’ Matthew 6:33, ‘Where God guides. He provides.’
