Francis Gilbert Hubert, youngest son of Napoleon F and Ella Robin Hubert, was born February 6, 1924, at the family farm home in Salix, Iowa. He attended St Joseph’s Catholic School, Salix, graduating in 1941.

Francis enlisted in the US Navy, December of 1942; after basic training at Great Lakes, Illinois, he was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Mission Bay as a machinist mate. For thirty-two months the carrier saw action in the Atlantic, Pacific, and China, Burma, India theatres of war. He was discharged in March, 1946, after thirty-nine months of duty and returned to Salix.

He was employed in Kankakee, Illinois; Senecal hardware, in Salix; then Cudahy Packing Plant, Sioux City, until its closing. In 1955, he began working at St Vincents’ Hospital, Sioux City as a boiler engineer. Now it is Marian Health Center and he is presently employed there.

October 9, 1951, he married Fayann Barrett, daughter of Wilbur and Mary McKenna Barrett, Salix. She was born December 1, 1933, at Geddes, South Dakota. She attended school at Fairfax, South Dakota; Hornick, Owego, and Salix in Iowa; and graduated in 1951 form St Joseph’s Catholic School, Salix. She worked at First National Bank in Sioux City, until her marriage. In 1968, they purchased a home at 508 Lakeport in Salix, where they presently live.

Francis and Fayann are parents of three sons and six daughters.

Steven, born August 8, 1952, of Salix, wife Janelle Clayton, Sloan, daughter of Donald and Blanche Hinkman Clayton, children: Michael, Emily and Tyler.

Linda, born December 20, 1953, of Hornick, Iowa, husband Aaron Cox, son of Mervin and Vera Lulo Cox, Hornick, children: Brian, Carrie, Cheryl.

Dennis, born December 30, 1954, of Sloan, Iowa,.

Charlene, November 23, 1956, of Salix, husband, Stanley Cain, son of Clyde and Martina Woods Cain of Salix, child: Dustin.

Lisabeth, born June 24, 1958, of Sioux City, Iowa.

Judith, August 19, 1960, Tustin, California, husband, Greg Cain, son of Clyde and Martina Woods Cain, Salix, child: Benjamin.

Timothy, born March 18, 1963, of Sioux City, Iowa.

Jean Marie, October 2, 1964, of Salix.

Debra, born July 13, 1970, of Salix.

The children attended St Joseph’s School, Salix, and Westwood Public School.

Mrs Huber has served as a member of the Salix City Council, being the first woman to hold this position. She also was chairman of the Planning and Zoning Commission and was a member of the Woodbury County Temporary Land Use Commission. At present, she is an executive board member for the Woodbury County Area Solid Waste Agency, also Chairman of the Salix Willow Festival, an annual town celebration held during Memorial weekend. Fayann and daughters, Linda, Charlene, Lisabeth and Judy were members of the Salix Women’s Softball Team, formed in 1972. The past six years, Mrs Hubert and children, Liz, Tim, Jean and Deb, have taken part in the Registers Annual great bike ride across Iowa, known as RAGBRAI, where thousands of bicyclists ride from the Missouri River to the Mississippi River, completing an average of four hundred miles from Sunday to Saturday.

With the birth of their first grandchild, Michael Hubert, son of Steven, in 1971, there are five generations living in Salix, within a few blocks of each other. They are: Esther McKenna, Mary McKenna Barrett, Fayann Barrett Hubert, Steven Hubert, and son, Michael Hubert.

We are very proud to be a part of the past and future of Salix.
