Calvin and Elizabeth Holder came from Lenoir, North Carolina, to Sergeant Bluff with their six children in November 1881. Their children, Evlin, John, James, Edward, Martha and Mary Ellen. Frank and Estella were born in Sergeant Bluff.

Calvin Holder was a Confederate soldier, wounded in the Battle of Gettysburg. He received a medical discharge from Company I, 26th Regiment, North Carolina Troops, on November 17, 1864. Elizabeth’s father, George Friddle, was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg.

When they came to Sergeant Bluff, where they had some relatives, they left Elizabeth’s brother, Finley Friddle, in Carolina. He was a furniture manufacturer, and was killed in an accident in Memphis, Tennessee.

Barbara Elizabeth worked in a cotton factory while the men were in the service.

Calvin was born August 17, 1838, and died September 14, 1894. Elizabeth was born August 13, 1845. They were married on August 13, 1865. She died in 1932.

Barbara Elizabeth was a strong-willed, religious woman, devoted to her family. She learned to read her Bible.

The family stayed at Welch Hotel upon their arrival. Later, they lived on various farms in what is known as ‘Weedland’. Some relatives already lived there before they came. The family liked it here so much that they had no desire to return to the South, even for a visit, according to Elizabeth.

All of the family was reared in this community.

Evlin Saphronia, Mrs Ed Patterson, is deceased. She had five children, none of whom live in this community.

John Finley married Dora Patterson. Both are deceased. Also daughters, Nora and Florence are deceased, in California.

James Calvin married Margaret Brasfield. Both are deceased, and their children live in California.

Edward Carter married Tweet Belfrage. Both they and their son, Milo, are deceased. Jack has two children, and lives in Texas.

Martha, Mrs Simeon Watson, both deceased, had ho children.

Mary Ellen, Mrs Ellsworth N Hall. Her son, George and his family, and daughter, Ruth, live at Sergeant Bluff.

Frank Hezekiah married Golda Russ. He and Golda are both deceased. One daughter, Irene, Mrs Elmo Ashburn, lives at Plainview, Nebraska. The second daughter, Dorothee, Mrs Fae Evans, and family reside in northern California.

Estella, Mrs L E Welch. Both members of the family are deceased, and had no children.

Calvin Holder died in 1894 and Elizabeth in 1922.
