George H Hinkhouse, son of William H and Lena Benedix Hinkhouse, was born March 11, 1906, on a farm near Pierson, Iowa. His father, William H Hinkhouse came to the United States in 1882 at the age of seventeen from Hanover, Germany. He made his home with relatives in Cedar County, Iowa, until 1891 when he came west to Woodbury County to a farm near Pierson, Iowa. To this union were born three children: Willie B, Hilda, married to W D Hardie; and George.

The Hinkhouses with one son, George, moved into the Town of Pierson High School in 1924. Following graduation he attended Mankato Commercial College in Minnesota for two years. In 1926, he was employed at the Wisconsin Lumber Company, later becoming manager until it sold in 1934. He was employed by J D Barber Construction Company as a carpenter until 1943 when he became manager of the Farmers Coop Elevator at Correctionville, Iowa. In 1944, the family moved from Pierson to Correctionville.

While in Pierson he served on the town council and was a member of Rutland Masonic Lodge, transferring to Burning Bush Lodge at Correctionville, where he received his fifty year certificate. He served several terms as a council member and volunteer fireman at Correctionville. He was co-chairman of the Correctionville Centennial in 1955.

He married Fern Baker, daughter of Loyd and Ruth Baker on December 1, 1929. Fern was born May 18, 1909. She graduated from Pierson High School in 1927; after graduation she was employed by Mr J P McGraw in the grocery store.

They are the parents of three children, one son and two daughters, James Edward was born November 4, 1930. He graduated from Correctionville High School in 1948 and enlisted in the U S Navy and was discharged in 1952. After his tour in the Navy he became employed by Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. He married Faye Fusselman in 1954 at Bristow, Nebraska. Faye is a teacher in the Eastwood School system. They have two children, Shari Lu and Jay James. James ‘Jim’ is now retired after more than thirty years with the Bell Telephone Company.

Daughter, Beverly, was born October 26, 1932. She graduated from Correctionville High School in 1950 and later graduated from Methodist School of Nursing in Sioux City. She married Richard Jaacks in 1954. They have one adopted daughter, Connie. Richard has retired from the Iowa State Highway Department and they now live in LeMars, Iowa.

Youngest daughter, Cleo, was born July 29, 1934. She graduated from the Correctionville High School in 1951. Following graduation she attended NBT in Sioux City and was employed doing secretarial work. She married Bob Byrd at Wichita, Kansas. They have four sons and a daughter: Brad, Stephen, Brian, David and Rita. Cleo is employed full time doing secretarial work. Her husband, Bob, is employed by Allis Chalmers, and they live in Shawnee, Kansas.

George retired from the Farmers Coop Elevator July 1971. After his retirement he collected and repaired clocks; he also did small carpenter jobs and woodworking.

After a brief illness, he died May 3, 1978.
