Amelia Krueger Timmerman Henderson
By Muriel C Winterringer Meyer

Augusta Matilda Amelia Krueger was born October 21, 1853, in Ravenstein, Germany. She said she came to America at the age of nine, which would have been in 1862, but since a younger sister was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in August 1861, I believe she must have come with her parents in 1961. Even in the1900 census she is listed as coming in 1862, while her mother in a different house is listed as arriving in 1861. We have not found them on a passenger list. Her parents, according to the census, were: Henrietta Hintz and Charles Krueger. A younger brother insists the father’s name was Carl. Perhaps it was both. The family was in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa, by 1870. Whether she attended school there is not known; the family did speak German in the home and she was a Methodist.

We have not found the marriage record, but believe her marriage to have been in 1875 to Frederick Timmerman. He was a farmer born in Germany and an alien in the 1885 census of Linton Township, Allamakee County. He was forty-two years old, but by 1895 he was only forty-eight years. By then he was entitled to vote, so had apparently become naturalized; he was of the Lutheran Faith. They were the parents of eight children: (1) Herman Frederick Timmerman, was born May 14, 1876, at Monroe, Allamakee County, Iowa; (2) William Clarence Timmerman was born May 6, 1878, at Girard in Clayton County, Iowa; (3) Franklin Arthur Timmerman was born June 9, 1881, at McGregor in Clayton County, Iowa; (4) Lillian Wilhelmena Timmerman was born May 12, 1883, at Calmar, Winnesheik County, Iowa; (5) Mabel Irene Timmerman was born January 20, 1888, near Watson, Allamakee County, Iowa; (6) Elsie Alvina Timmerman was born August 18, 1891, at McGregor, Clayton County, Iowa; (7) Malinda Ruth Timmerman was born July 10, 1894, at Volney, Allamakee County, Iowa; and (8) Esther Melina Timmerman was born March 5, 1896, at Volney, Allamakee County, Iowa.

Frederick died near Volney, Iowa, on April 7, 1896, shortly after the birth of the last daughter. He was born in 1834; the grave is in McGregor. The petition for probate was dated December 14, 1896, 160 acres in Section 29 of Twp 96 (Linton) Range 4 West in Allamakee County. The final report on the probate was dated March 11, 1901. Herman, the oldest son, took on the responsibility of providing for the family. The family was still in Linton Township at the time of the 1900 census. The grandmother was still living, next to them, as well as her son, Gustavia Krueger, born April 1957, Germany.

In 1909 Amelia and her daughter, Elsie, went to Roundup, Montana, and ‘homesteaded’. As far as I can figure out they returned the same year.

Herman and Mabel were in O’Brien County as early as 1908. They had come to Oto, and then to Archer, but am not sure just when.

Lillian married Eugene Knapp and raised her family near Elkader, Iowa. Their children were: Ruth, Margaret, Frederick, Norma and Vernon Knapp. Lillian died in 1977.

In the 1910 census I found Amelia and her second husband, James B Henderson, living in the town of Oto, on State Street. With them was Wayne J Henderson, age 13, son of James. Amelia was a washerwoman at home. It was the second marriage for both of them and they had been married less than a year. He was a section hand on the railroad. Frank Timmerman, then 28, was living with the Frank Krueger family, his mother’s brother. Linda Timmerman was a servant in the Jack Weathers home. Elsie was a domestic in the home of Frank Giles, the Oto Postmaster.

James died at Oto on June 11, 1910; he body was sent to Monona, Iowa for burial. On his death record, at the Woodbury County Court House, I learned he had been born March 15, 1854, in Ohio. His father was Andrew and his mother, Catherine.

Amelia took turns at living with her children. She made some money by tatting edgings for hankies and pillow cases. She did a beautiful job and always seemed to have orders to keep her busy. For a time, she lived with her sister, Lucy Krueger, in Oto. It was there she was living at the time of her death on March 9, 1941. Burial was in the Oto Cemetery.

William Clarence Timmerman was married to Mae, from Sheldon, Iowa. Mae’s birthday was July 8. Will and Mae had two children: Lennard, born October 13, and Leila Mae born December 10. Leila married Vern Biseman and they had at least two children: Billy and Verna Erlene. They all left Sioux City before 1942, and lived in San Diego, California. Lennard married in California; they had several children. He died before 1981, in California.

Will died about 1957 in California.
