The Luse Family

Benjamin W Luse was born March 3, 1852, in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. He was a son of O Perry and Mary E (Hoobler) Luse. He was Irish on his father’s side and German on his mother’s side. In 1855 he moved to Wisconsin, and in 1865 to Jackson County, Iowa. He married Loretta (Pulcifer) Estey and they moved to Woodbury County, Iowa, in 1882. William A Luse was born on January 13, 1884, followed by Elmer, Clyde, Clara, Ethel and Gladys.

William A Luse married Mattie A Leinbaugh on March 10, 1909. To this union was born Darold, Wilma, Melvin, Lois Wayne, Audrey, Janice, Lucille, William Jr, Sylvan and Kenneth. Will Luse farmed with is father, Benjamin, and by himself until 1928. He was a coal dealer in Strawberry Point, Iowa, until moving back to Moville, Iowa, in 1943. He passed away on May 16, 1967. His son, Melvin Luse, farmed at Strawberry Point, Iowa, until moving to Moville, in 1944 to farm and raised turkeys. Melvin Luse married Iona Debes and they had tow sons, Kenneth and Keith.

After serving in the U S Navy before and during World War II, Wayne Luse attended Morningside College and graduated form the University of Iowa, in May of 1950. He married Virginia Sanborn, on May 25, 1947. Their children are William, James, Cynthia, and Rosalie. William is an artist in Minneapolis, and Cynthia is an Insurance Consultant in Minnesota. Wayne Luse became affiliated with the Farmers Mutual Insurance Association of Moville, Iowa, in 1950. He became its Secretary-Manager in 1957. Wayne Luse was elected as a director of the Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company of Grinnell, Iowa, in 1967, and has served as its Chairman for the last four years. Virginia Luse graduated from the University of Minnesota in Dietetics. She interned at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, and was employed at the University Hospital at Iowa City, Iowa, as a dietitian. She later acquired a teaching certificate from Morningside College and taught Home Ec and Art at Woodbury Central in Moville, and also at Lawton, Iowa. She has been active in Women’s Club, Eastern Star, the United Methodist Church and enjoys gardening, growing flowers and art activities.

Audrey Luse married George Georgesen of Homer, Nebraska. George is a long time Standard Oil employee. They have children, Ronald, Linda, and Steven. They have built many houses in Sioux City and own a number of commercial properties.

Janice Luse married Gayl Farnum of Sumner, Iowa, a teacher and Insurance man. They have two sons, James and Charles. Janice has taught vocal music in Maquoketa’s High School for 30 years.

Lucille Luse married Duane Know of Arlington, Iowa. Duane is a college professor at Clark University in Worchester, Massachusetts. They have two daughters, Nanette and Barbara. Lucille sang in Barber Shop Competition in a quartet which competed in National and International contests.

Sylvan Luse married Donna Hanner of Holly Springs, Iowa, and they have five children, Michael, Patrick, Timothy, Todd and Tammy. Sylvan was in the Air Force, raised turkeys, and now operates a Health Food Store in the Southern Hills Mall in Sioux City, Iowa.
