William Amos McArthur, born 7 October 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa, is the son of Nathaniel McArthur and Edith Margaret Winans. The family resided in the Greenville and Coles Addition area, moving to Leeds in 1939. ‘Bill’, his sister Edith and brother, Eugene, entered Leeds High School when it opened in 1939 and were active in all sport and choir activities. Bill played baseball with the American Legion ‘Junior League’ team and was well known for his basketball achievements in Leeds High. Bill and ‘Gene’ served in the Navy during WWII and hired out on the Great Northern Railroad in 1946 on the Sioux City-Wilmar Minnesota Division. They were Firemen and Engineers on steam locomotives, oil burners and diesel locomotives, as was their father whom they often ‘fired for’ or met on the line.

‘Bill’ married Marian Alice Bennett, daughter of Jacob W Bennett and Mary Alice Dunn, 21 June 1947, in Sioux City, Iowa. Their children are Gary Lee William, born 21 August 1948, married Joanne Mary Shumansky, 27 February 1971. He served during the Vietnam Conflict. Suan Kay, born 5 November 1952, married Harry Raymond Haneklaus, 17 March 1971. Their children: William Henry, Raymond Lee, James Bryan and Steven Paul. Mark Bryan, born 16 August 1958, married Susan Ellen Smith, 15 January 1983. Mark is serving in the Air Force. Linda Marie, born 16 February 1962, married Jeffrey Allen Walding, 24 April 1982. Their children: Jacob Allen and Benjamin Andrew.

Bill’s parents were Nathaniel McArthur, born 22 January 1890, in Plymouth County, Iowa, and Edith Margaret Winans, born 16 October 1886 in Franklin County, Nebraska, daughter of Amos Coleman Winans and Jane Cook. They were married in Sioux City, 8 May 1912. Nathaniel ‘hired out’ as a Fireman on steam locomotives for the Great Northern Railroad in 1917, and as engineer in 1924, working the Sioux City-Wilmar Minnesota Division on passenger trains and time freights. He retired in 1959. Edith died 1 February 1960 and Nathaniel died 16 May 1965. Their children, all born Sioux City.
Dorothy Jane, born 6 February 1914, died 28 December 1982, married John Edward Nice Jr, 18 May 1833, he died 1961. Children: John Richard, Donald Frances, Patrick McArthur, Margaret Anne, Mary Jo, Dorothy Kathleen, Bernard Eugene, Judith Elaine, Robert Paul, William Michael.
Maxine Mary, born 14 June 1917, married Floyd Franklin Jackman, 29 August 1941, he died 1981. Children: Phillip Michael, Donna Jean.
Eleanor Virginia, born 10 October 1919, married John Ralph Davis, 25 January 1955. Child: Mary Anne.
Nathaniel Eugene, born 17 July 1922, married Dorothy May Huber, 9 July 1947. Children: Alana Eugene, born 25 May 1948, died 8 March 1963. Regina Marie.
Edith Evelyn, born 1 July 1924.

Bill’s paternal grandfather was William McArthur, born 25 February 1864, near Guelph, Ontario, Canada. He married Laura Christine Smith, 26 July 1888, in Sioux County, Iowa. Their children were: Nathaniel; Earl, born 2 January 1894, died 2 May 1964; Lloyd, born 14 December 1895, died 30 November 1978. All were born in Plymouth County, Iowa. The family farmed there until 1897 when they moved to Sioux City. William died 14 February 1940.
Bill’s paternal grandmother, Laura Christine Smith, was born 17 July 1869, in Dubuque County, Dubuque, Iowa, daughter of John C Smith and Christina Curtis (both born in England). Laura died 28 January 1954 in Sioux City.
Bill’s paternal great-grandfather was Nathaniel McArthur, born 28 July 1828, in Scotland, died 30 September 1901, in Seney, Iowa. He married Fannie McKerley, daughter of John and Mary McKerley, on 11 May 1855 in Canada. They farmed in Canada until 1874 when they moved to Jackson County, Iowa, and then Plymouth County, Iowa. Fannie died 1 April 1916 in Navina, Oklahoma. Their childen: Sarah, born 1857; John, 1859; Daniel, 1861; William, 1864; Alexander, 1867; Duncan, 1868; Mary, 1862 – all in Canada.
Bill’s paternal great-great-grandfather was Duncan McArthur born in Scotland about 1801; married Sarah Ferguson, 28 August 1826. Their children were: Daniel, born 1826; Nathaniel, 1828; John, 1830, William, 1834; Isabella, 1836; and Alexander, 1838.
