William Frederick Krueger
By Arthur and Ivis Backes

William Frederick Krueger was born on June 5, 1866, near McGregor, Iowa. He grew up on a farm owned by his parents, Carl and Henrietta (Hintz) Krueger.

In 1896, he married Maude Lulu Apker at Plymouth, Iowa (a small town northeast of Mason City, in Cerro Gordo County). He met her when he was a young clerk in a store owned by her father, Samuel R Apker, a former Captain in the Union Army, who served under Civil War General William T Sherman.

A son, Harold Arthur, was born on December 30, 1899, at Plymouth. The family later moved to Oto, Iowa, where William owned and operated a general merchandise store with his brother, Frank.

A daughter, Ivis Lorraine, was born in Oto, October 22, 1904. While a resident of Oto, William was active in civic affairs – a member of the school board, the town clerk, and a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge. He was a member of the Federated Church of Oto. He and his wife sang in the church choir and were members of a mixed quartet. He and his son were members of the Oto band. His wife belonged to the Ladies Aid Society and the Womens Study Club. The daughter, Ivis, was always interested in music and started piano lessons at an early age and played for Sunday School when she was eleven or twelve years old.

In 1917, William retired and moved with his family to Sioux City, Iowa, where he again was active, serving on election boards and taking part in census work.

In later years he resided on an acreage in Morningside with his daughter and son-in-law, where he grew all kinds of fruit, berries, flowers and specialized in raising Fire Lillies.

William, whose wife preceded him in death at Sioux City on August 2, 1929, died on 2 January 1960 at the age of 93. The acreage where he resided is presently the site of Sunnyside Elementary School.

The son, Harold Krueger, married Anna Emily Petry on June 25, 1924, at Sioux City, Iowa. They had two children, Robert Harold, born January 25, 1926, and Jeanne Marie, born January 26, 1929. Harold Krueger was employed as a service engineer, at the Burroughs Corporation, at Sioux City for forty-two years. He retired in 1962 and died on October 25, 1967. His wife, Anna, continues to reside in Sioux City.

Their son, Dr Robert Krueger, PhD, married Astrid Minerva Pokela on May 12, 1956. Robert is manager of Physical Chemistry Borg Warner Corp, Roy Ingersoll Research Center in Des Plains, Illinois. They have three children: Matthew William, born March 15, 1959; Sandra Johanna, born July 10, 1961; and Frederick Peter, born April 23, 1966.

Their daughter, Jeanne, married John Lawrence Wilds, a lawyer, in 1951 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They have four children: Jill Marie, born July 13, 1954, who married James G Entenman on March 22, 1975. Jill and James have two sons: James born in 1978 and Joseph, born in 1981.

Jamie Ann, born October 19, 1957, married Kurt Pavey in 1980.

Joan Louisa, born May 9, 1960, married John A Mutchelknaus in July of 1982.

Judy Lynn was born May 16, 1962.

William’s daughter, Ivis Lorraine, graduated form Sioux City Central High School in January, 1923. She married Arthur Lyle Backes on December 4, 1926. Arthur was born at Omaha, Nebraska, on August 20, 1902. He was previously employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, and later the Sioux City Journal. Both were active members of St James Methodist Church in Sioux City, where she was church organist and taught music privately. They had one daughter, Anna Mae, born October 6, 1927. She married Billy Bruce Bennett in 1947. Anna Mae and Billy have one son, Jeffrey Bruce, born March 11, 1954. Jeffrey married Nancy Dean Klemm on 29 November 1981.

After Arthur’s retirement, he and Ivis moved form Sioux City to Newbury Park, California, in 1968 to be near their daughter, grandson, and her husband (who in 1979 retired after being with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 25 years). Anna Mae and her husband reside in Woodland Hills, California.

Arthur and Ivis are enjoying their retirement in California, he taking care of the yard work and she doing crocheting and hooking rugs. They became great grandparents on May 23, 1983, with the birth of Jason William Bennett to Nancy and Jeffrey.
