History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Lucy Krueger
By Muriel C Meyer

Lucy Lisette Krueger was the first daughter of Charles ‘Carl’ and Henrietta Hintz Krueger to be born in the United States. She was born August 21, 1861, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The date of her parents arrival in the United States is not known, but it was in the year 1861.

Lucy grew up in Linton Township, Allamakee County, Iowa. The family spoke German in the home. When the rest of the family ventured to Woodbury County, around the turn of the century, she remained with her mother. I believe her mother died on 31 July 1912 at the age of 82. The funeral service was at the ‘Old Stone Church’ near Watson in Allamakee County.

Lucy then came to Woodbury County to be near her brothers, William and Frank, who were early-day merchants in Oto. Lucy had a small home of her own in the town of Oto. She never did marry. She worked for a family in Anthon at one time. I have been told she was a very good cook.

She was still living in her own home at the age of 100 years. However, she did moved to the Ingleside Nursing Home in Sioux City, in November of that year. She died in a Sioux City hospital of pneumonia on January 22, 1962. Burial was in the Oto Cemetery.
