History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Kneebone-Whitmore
By Blanche Leone Kneebone Whitmore

Blanche Leone Kneebone was born to Henry Arthur, Jr and Helen Irene (Newton) Kneebone, March 12, 1905, at the home of 1800 Hamilton Street. The house burned when she was ten days old and was rebuilt as 223 W 18th.

She went to Hopkins and Geneva Street, West Junior on W 5th, and Central High on 12th Street, known as the Castle on the Hill, Pop Hightman was the Principal.

There were a few houses in the neighborhood and Hamilton Street was a trail. W 18th Street wasn’t there. There was a well and pump outside the back door for water. Neighbors were Opal and Stanley Leveiller. Gilman Park was a ball diamond and ice skating rink.

Blanche married Clarence Leonard Whitmore, 24 July 1923, in her parents’ home. Clarence was born at Irene, Yankton County, South Dakota. They had six children. The first baby, a girl, died at premature birth. The others were Clarence, Charles, June, Joan and Lucille.

There was a fire in their home at 1808 Hamilton Boulevard on 13 December 1956, and Clarence Leonard died in the fire. He is buried in Logan Park Cemetery, Sioux City, Iowa.

Blanche still resides in their home.
