History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Kenneth and Ina (Reed) Joy

Kenneth Arlos Joy, son of John and Florence (Reyman) Joy, was born September 13, 1915, on a farm five miles southwest of Cushing. He first attended a rural school five miles south of Cushing. On bad days, he rode behind his father on a saddle horse to school. He attended a rural school south of Holstein for two years. When the family moved back to the Cushing area, he entered seventh grade in Cushing Consolidated School. In 1932 he graduated from high school there.

Kenneth began ‘working out’ of farms around Cushing during the summer months while he was still in school. Following graduation, he continued with farm work until the age of twenty. Then he began working for Carl Burow, who owned and operated the service station east of Cushing. A year later he began working for Howard Anfinson at the corner garage. He drove the Phillip’s 77 tank wagon for him.

On July 28, 1939, he was married to Ina Reed from Linn Grove. Ina was born January 18, 1916, on a farm five miles northwest of Peterson. She attended grade school and high school at Peterson, graduating in 1933. She attended Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls for two years, earning a certificate for teaching in the elementary grades. She taught two years at Lawton and two years at Primghar before her marriage.

Following their marriage, they lived in the Balkema house which Tom and Rita Joy now own. Kenneth bought the tank truck from Howard Anfinson and took over the job as bulk agent for Phillip’s 66. In the fall of 1941, Kenneth and Ina bought the ‘Lowry house’ (now owned by Kathy and Don Joy, Jr) from Lulu and Harry Brownlee. They were just nicely settled when the Armistice blizzard hit. For fuel they had nothing but cobs to burn.

They lived here until 1944, when the sold the tank wagon business to Frank Hummel and moved to a farm they rented near Quimby. Colleen was born while they lived there (March 30, 1945). They were flooded both years they lived there and decided to move back to their house in Cushing. They rented a farm from Ernie Reyman (his uncle) and farmed for a year.

In 1947 he and Vernon Stoneking became partners in Joy and Stoneking Plumbing and Heating. While living in Cushing, Jacque was born, May 31, 1948. In February, 1948, they purchased a farm two miles south of town where the Charles Knapps lived. In March, 1949, they moved there and lived for thirty years. Daniel John was born when they lived there on November 28, 1951. He lived but a short day. He was buried in the Cushing Cemetery.

From 1957 to 1972, Ina taught third grade in the Cushing Consolidated School and Eastwood. Colleen and Jacque attended grade and high school at Cushing Consolidated School. They attended Iowa State University at Ames, each earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics Education.

Since 1967, Colleen has been teaching vocational home economics at Prairie Community School at Gowrie. In 1971, she received her Master of Science degree in Textiles and Clothing form Indiana State University.

Jacque was married to Darwin L Schipper from Allison, February 28, 1970. Darwin received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1971. They moved to Preston where Darwin became a partner at a veterinary clinic. They have three children: Bradley David, born September 20, 1970; Darren James, born September 22, 1973; and Laura Lee, born June 10, 1980.

Kenneth and Ina moved to the home they built in Cushing in April, 1979. Here they will spend their retirement years. Kenneth, Ina, and Colleen are members of the Cushing United Methodist Church.
