Harrison Clay Joseph Family
By Elaine L Marquart Remmem

Harrison Clay Joseph was my maternal grandfather, Jeremiah Joseph, my #4 great grandfather, was the father of the earliest known member of the Joseph family to be born in America, namely. William Joseph who was born in 1746 in Sussex County, Delaware and died in Monongalia County, Virginia in 1828. William married Sarah Stafford, 1748-1834, in 1766 in Virginia. William and Sarah had ten children, one of whom was my great, great grandfather Jeremiah Joseph, 1773-1856. Jeremiah married Mary (also known as Polly) Smith in 1793. Jeremiah and Mary had ten children, one of them being my great grandfather, Lemuel Joseph who was born in 1804 in Virginia and died in Vernon County, Wisconsin in 1873. Lemuel married Martha Richey who was born in 1810 in Pennsylvania and died in Woodbury County, Iowa. Lemuel and Martha were married in 1828 in Muskingum County, Ohio. Lemuel had migrated with his family to Ohio about 1827. In 1855, Lemuel and Martha migrated to Vernon County, Wisconsin. He was a surveyor and farmer near the town of Webster, Wisconsin. His sons who served in the Civil War were Webb, Grant, Ulysses, Noah and Harrison Joseph who was a Corporal. Harrison married Mary Elizabeth Groves who was born in Perry County, Ohio. Her parents were John S Groves and Emeline Rogers. Harrison and Mary Elizabeth were married March 31, 1867 in the home of her parents at Viroqua, Wisconsin. Harrison was also a surveyor and farmer. The couple migrated to Lawton, Woodbury County, Iowa, where eight of their twelve children were born. The four children who were born in Vernon County, Wisconsin were: Emma Jane, 1898-1946; Julia Sarah, 1870-1870; Alice Martha, 1871-1941; and Jane who died as an infant.

Harrison’s brother, Thomas Joseph homesteaded southwest of the present town of Lawton, Iowa, proving ownership in 1878. He sold a portion of this land to Harrison in 1883.

The children of Harrison and Mary Elizabeth who were born in Woodbury County, Iowa, were John Franklin, 1874-1944; Blanche Myrtle, 1885-1955; Maude Beatrice, 1887-1958; and Mildred Elsie, 1889-1966. Four young children who died of diphtheria were Hettie Roena, 1882-1883; Hartwell Allen, 1875-1883; Alonzo Austin, 1879-1883, and Harrison Isaac, 1883-1884. The story concerning the death of the children at about the same time, was that their father, Harrison Jospeh, had been a medic in the army so considered himself the person to visit the sick. The family of Harrison Joseph have generally remained in the area of Woodbury County, Iowa, since the time when Harrison and Mary Elizabeth moved there in the 1870’s. The home farm is now owned by the Richard McNaughton family. A part of the farm has been sold for residence. A new house, on part of the land, is the present home of Richard and Betty McNaughton although the old farm house still stands. The Joseph family was always interested in community affairs. During the years that the family lived in Virginia, West Virginia, and Ohio, the church of their choice was Methodist. Often the family was known to house the traveling ministers who came through on their circuit. In later years, most of the members of the family have associated with the Presbyterian Church, although some are members of the Lutheran, Methodist, and Catholic Churches. Harrison Joseph was very definitely against hard liquor. He would get an injunction against any building if anyone tried to sell hard liquor in a building in the town of Lawton. He was tall of stature and wore a complete beard. Those male descendants of Harrison Joseph who will carry on the Joseph names are John F Joseph, Robert Joseph, and Robert’s sons, Dennis and David Joseph.
