History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Lloyd and Elsie (Bolton) Johnson
By Armin Johnson

Lloyd L Johnson was born on the 31st day of March 1889 as the third son of Francis Wayland Johnson and Ella R Bappe at Lawton, Iowa. He was married to Elsie R Bolton of Martinsburg, Nebraska. Her birth date was the 5th day of September 1895. She was the oldest daughter of William A Bolton.

The wedding was held on the family homestead at Lawton, Iowa on the 25th day of November 1914, with many friends and relatives attending. They resided all of their years as farmers in the Lawton, Iowa, community. Approximately 40 of these years were spent on the family homestead that was purchased from W A Johnson.

To this union eight children were born: Leonard R Johnson, born August 31, 1917, died December 13, 1972; Ernest L Johnson, born October 3, 1917, died October 2, 1918; Armin B Johnson, born March 23, 1920; Noah W Johnson, born December 7, 1923; Darrell R Johnson, born June 5, 1929; Erma R Johnson, born February 23, 1932; Lela L Johnson, born November 29, 1934; and Isaac L Johnson, born February 29., 1941. There are approximately twenty-four grandchildren.

Lloyd and Elsie were members of the Lawton Presbyterian Church and members of the Odd Fellow and Rebecca Lodge of Moville, Iowa.

Lloyd loved all animals, especially horses. He took great pride in breaking them for farm use and enjoyed trading with the traders that traveled through the country about twice a year.

One memory that was of interest to the family: Lloyd and his good friend and neighbor, Bob Johnson, would get together on rainy days and dicker on trade of one horse. At times it would get to the point who would get the halter. He also could point out the burial places of all his favorite horses to anyone who would show interest. These were from the time he was a little boy.

The depression of the 1930’s was a struggle but by raising hogs and many hours of hard labor he paid for the farm. He did local trucking to help provide for his family. Two of his sons, Armin and Noah, joined the Air Force during World War II. At this time the children remaining at home helped with the farming and milking of many cows.

About 1945, Lloyd purchased three more pieces of land, south and west of Moville, Iowa. On May 11, 1958, Lloyd was plowing a field near a ditch which caved in and he was killed. He was buried at the Arlington Cemetery at Moville, Iowa. His wife, Elsie, moved into Moville where she lived with her daughter Erma for her remaining years. She died in a Sioux City Hospital on the 10th day of June 1962. Elsie was buried along side her loved one in the Arlington Cemetery.
