John LeRoy ‘Roy’ Miltenberger was born September 19, 1895, at Bartley, Nebraska, the son of John Walter Miltenberger and Elisabeth Schroder. Roy married Eva Winfred Yarnall on June 2, 1917, at Lincoln, Nebraska. Winifred was born July 22, 1897 at Cortland, Nebraska, the daughter of John Bennington Yarnall and Eva Margaret Goodban.

Roy and Winifred had six children. They are: Ralph LeRoy, born March 15, 1918, at Cortland; Vivian Faye, born April 4, 1920, at Cortland; Virginia Hazel, born September 28, 1921, at Cortland; Herbert Lyle, born September 28, 1927, at Cortland; and Glenn Gary, born May 25, 1936, at Whiting, Iowa.

Roy was interested in music and when he was a young boy in the fields with a team of horses he would carry a mouthpiece of a horn and practice. As a young man he played in dance bands in Nebraska and in the town bands.

Roy was a farmer, moving to Iowa for better land to farm. He was one of the first men in the county to start ditch digging and leveling to drain water and improve the farm ground.
