William Fleck was born about 1851 and died March 12, 1897. He was the son of C. Fleck and Frediuclla Cryger of Ohio. He came to Sioux City, Iowa, about 1880 and worked in the brewery business until his death. He married Magaret Melcher on May 16, 1883. Margaret was born in May of 1860, and died of typhoid fever on Augustr 24, 1891, as a young wife and mother. She was the daughter of John Melcher, 1827-1912, and Maria nee Kahpes, 1827-1915. John and Maria came from Rathig, Germany. John journeyed to American by boat with Maria’s parents and family; they later married in America.

During the short time that William and Margaret were married, they gave birth to two children: Carl Bernard, born July 25, 1884, died September 16, 1963; and Maria, born September 1886, died of pneumonia on May 11, 1891, just three months prior to her mother’s death. Carl became an orphan at the age of thirteen when his father died of pneumonia. He went to Ashton, Iowa, to live with his grandparents. Later he returned to Sioux City to attend National Business Training School. He enjoyed reading and was a mathematical whiz. He worked for a lawyer by the name of Sam Page. He also worked as a court reporder for the Municipal Court of Sioux City and later filled the position of Clerk of Courts. He enjoyed fishing and often took fishing trips to Minnesota and South Dakota by train. Carl was a superintendent of Hansen Glass and Paint Company where he retired after 45 years of service. He was an officer in the Elks for a number of years.

On May 15, 1906, Carl married Maude Elizabeth Hunt in St Boniface Church in Sioux City. Maude was born April 12, 1886, in Bridgewater, South Dakota, and died June 16, 1954. She was the daughter of Alvin Hunt and Whilaminia Timion. Maude traveled at every opportunity, enjoyed painting figurines, and was an excellent seamstress. They had three chidlren: Helen Beatrice, born Decmeber 25, 1907; William Carl, born Janaury 19, 1913; and Vernon Francis, born January 11, 1922.

On September 15, 1931, Helen married Earl Edward Weidert, born April 16, 1906, died February 1981. They had two daughters: Denece Ann, born February 9, 1939, and Carol Margaret, born October 12, 1942.

Denece married Raymond Socknat and has three children: Danny, Sherrie and Nicholas. Carol married Richard Kane and has four children: Margaret, Richard, Colleen and Anne Elizabeth.

Helen worked for T S Martin Company and Sioux City Crockery. She is now enjoying an active retirement.

William married Agnes Lambert on July 17, 1937, and has one daughter, Aundrea, born May 9, 1938. He was in the Army for four years and served his time in the Philippine Islands. He was employed by Douglas Aircraft in California and later moved to Providence, Rhode Island, where he still resides. He was employed by Brown and Sharp Tool and Die Company in Providence prior to his retirement.

Vernon married Phyllis E Manzer on July 12, 1941. They have five children: Charlene A, born July 4, 1942; Larry C, born July 27, 1943; Stephen M, born January 17, 1946; Linda L, born June 9, 1948; and Donna R, born June 27, 1950. (See Vernon Fleck Family.)
