Walter Wallace Glover
By Leona Glover Davis

Walter Wallace Glover, a son of William Lafayette and Emily Frances Rains Glover, was married February 13, 1907, to Rosa May Lamb. They lived with his parents until March 1, 1909. Then they moved to the Wilcox farm, located three-fourth mile north of Sloan; five miles west and three-fourth mile north; or one mile west and thre-fourths mile north of the Glover School.

In October 1909, they took Walter and William Glover, children of Robert and Daisy Glover, to care for. Robert and Daisy had separated. Daisy kept the baby, Bobbie, with her and obtained work near Martinsburg, wehre they had been living.

Here on the Wilcox farm, Leona Melissa Glover was born June 5, 1910, and on August 31, 1912, another girl was born, named Emily May Glover.

In December, 1912, Daisy Glover came and took Walter and William to live with her, as she was planning to marry again, and did.

On January 2, 1914, Chalres Alvin Glover arrived and on August 3, 1915, Donald LeRoy Glover arrived.

In the summer of 1916, the Missouri River started cutting very badly. William Glover’s house was moved to a few hundred feet west of the schoolhouse, and left to sit along the side of the road for many years. The sawmill was dismantled and moved. Frank Barker bought the Wilcox house and moved it to Sloan. He built a new kitchen on it, as in the process of moving the house, the original kitchen, pantry, and one bedroom had been cut off to make it easier for the house to be moved.

Walter and family lived with his parents that fall of 1916 and early winter in their three-room house along the side of the road west of the schoolhouse. Then he rented the William Smith farm and with his family and parents, moved there March 1917.

On May 26, 1917, Walter’s mother, Emily, passed away.

On July 8, 1917, Walter and Rosa’s fifth child, Walter Daniel Glover arrived.

On March 1, 1918, Walter and family, and his father, moved to the Boyd farm. Only twenty or thirty acres of it remained, as the river had taken quite a huge slice of it, plus many more farms. The Boyd house had been moved up to beside the schoolhouse and left set on blocks at the side of the road for many years, as they thought they might have to move it again at any time. The river was so vicious, wicked, and unpredictable. Here on the Boyd farm, on May 18, 1919, another child was born, a girl, Elsie Irene Glover. Then on December 20, 1921, Irma Vivian Glover was born, making seven children born to this union.

On March 1, 1923, Walter and family, and his father, moved back to the William Smith farm, then owned by Ben Fiddler, presently owned and farmed by Clyde Kirk. There, on December 16, 1923, Walter’s dad, William, passed away.

On March 1, 1924, Walter and family moved back to the Boyd farm, where they remained until January 1943. They sold their farm machinery and household goods, and moved to Ogden, Utah, where his sister Laura lived. The son, Donald, lived there alos. Walter obtained work at Hilfield Air Force Base, and worked there until he had a stroke in 1957 at the age of 77 and had to retire. Rosa obtained work at Utah General Depot at Hillfield, Utah, later at Ogden Arsenal. Walter Wallce Glover passed away February 12, 1967, just one day before their 60th wedding anniversary. Rosa passed away March 5, 1978.
