History of Woodbury County, Iowa 1984

Oscar and Laura A Walker Harrison
By Loraine E Washborn

Oscar Harrison was born 21 October 1865, in Climax Township, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, the eldest son of Alexander Harrison and MaryEm Roe. We believe the family came to Iowa in the mid 1870’s, but did some traveling to other states, and also lived for some months in Plymouth County before settling in Woodbury County before settling in Woodbury County. By the 1915 Iowa Census, Oscar was a resident of Woodbury County since 1879. He resided on the same farm as his parents in Section eleven, Banner Township, from the time of purchase in 1888, until the time of his death at his home on 22 February 1839. He was a farmer, and said to be a genle person, with a love of children. He is buried in Lincoln Township Cemetery, Plymouth County, Iowa, near his parents. Oscar was married 21 August 1892 in Texas County, Missouri, to Laura Angeline Walker.

Laura Angeline Walker, was born 26 September 1874, at Mountain Grove, Missouri. She was the daughter of Henry Thomas Walker, who was an Army Veteran of the Civil War, and Elizabeth Shields. The Walker family can be traced back to Richard J Walker who was born in 1769 in Virginia. The Shields family can be traced back to James Shield, born about 1633/35 in County Armagh, Ireland. Laura was a housewife and mother. She died, following a gallstone operation, in a Sioux City Hospital on 10 January 1938.

Oscar and Laura were parents of seven sons: the eldest, Elmer, born 1893, died as a young boy. The others were: Thomas 1894-1967; Howard, 1896-1978; Carl, 1897-1933; William, 1899 – a resident of Lawton; Benjamin, 1901-1974; and Everett, 1907 – a resident of Banner Township, Woodbury County, Iowa.
