John Alvin Davenport was elected Woodbury County Sheriff in 1929 or 1930. Before serving his term of office, he worked for Haley-Neeley Wholesale Grocers. John A was born in Newport, Washington County, Ohio, January 24, 1871. He married Flora Selmone Richardson, October 5, 1904, at New Metamoras, Ohio. John died October 16, 1939.

Flora was born at New Matamoras, Ohio, March 11, 1878. She died at Idyllwood, Virginia, December 30, 1960. Flora Davenport was dean of girls at East Junior School and later East High School in Sioux City. She was honored as a Journal Woman of Achievement in 1947.

Their son, Samuel Richardson, and his wife, Blanche, had two daughters: Rosalyn and Jeffra. AARosalyn is married to David Parker Gibbs, Jr. Their children are: David P Gibbs, III, Jonathan Richardson Gibbs, and Susan Marie Gibbs (married to Paul Daily) and the mother of Jacqueline Daily.

Jeffra is married to Samuel Macin Estill. Their children are: Kathryn Elaine Estill and Phillip Macin Estill.
