Raymond and Freda (Westphal) Brosamle
By Raymond Brosamle

Raymond Carl ‘Tootie’ Brosamle was born September 16, 1911, to Richard and Johanna (Kemming) Brosamle, at Battle Creek, Iowa. He was the youngest of seven children. He received his education in rural Battle Township, and was baptized and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church at Battle Creek, Iowa. His mother passed away when he was eleven years of age. He grew up in the family home and Battle Creek community.

He was united in marriage to Freda Westphal on October 25, 1934, at Yankton, South Dakota.

Freda was born March 28, 1915, in Battle Township to Ferdinand and Betty (Dittmer) Westphal. At age three, with her parents and three sisters, she moved to a farm two miles southwest of Cushing. The farm was purchased in 1916. She received her education in the Cushing Consolidated School, graduating in 1934. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church at Cushing.

After their marriage, Raymond worked as a farm hand for three years. In 1938, they took up farming six miles southwest of Cushing, on a farm owned by Freda’s father. They farmed this for five years, then they purchased a farm of their own, just one mile south of the farm where Freda grew up. They farmed this place thirty-four years, until Ray was forced to give up farming due to major hip surgery. They remained living on the farm another four years, renting the land.

Many major repairs were done through the years on the dwelling and other buildings, including a new chicken house, garage, and concrete drive. They sold the ten-acre building site to Thomas and Lisa Morgan in 1977, and built a new home in Cushing. They retired to this home just after Thanksgiving of the same year. In 1983, they had owned this farm for forty years.

Raymond served as director of Eureka School District several years, and on the Cushing School Board for twelve years. He was a bus driver for Cushing and later Eastwood Schools for seven years.

Raymond and Freda are active members of St John Lutheran Church, serving on the Council and in various others church offices.

They have two children: Rodney Ray Brosamle, born September 30, 1935; and Gail Lorraine Brosamle Stanton, born June 10, 1938.

Rodney attended Eureka country school for two years and finished his education in Cushing, graduating in 1954. He was baptized and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church at Cushing. Rodney enlisted with the armed forces in January of 1955 and served two years at El Paso, Texas, and Bremerton, Washington. He married Marllys Anita Speer, November 22, 1959. They are living in the Galva-Holstein community.

Rodney has been successful in his farming operations. The past five years he has been manager of Amaco Fertilizer Company at Galva. This fall (1983) he has become owner of the plant under the Cropmate Fertilizer Company. Marllys had been in the teaching profession for twenty-three years, presently teaching in the Galva-Holstein Schools.

Rodney and Marllys have two children: Jeffrey William, born January 22, 1961; and Joy Rae, born August 18, 1962. Both children were baptized in St John Lutheran Church and received their education in the Galva School. Jeff continued his education, taking a two year diesel mechanic course at Sheldon, Iowa. He is presently working in Cherokee. Joy furthered her education at various colleges and is presently working in Spencer.

Gail Lorraine received her education in the Cushing School System, graduating in 1956. Gail was baptized and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church in Cushing. She attended Wayne State Teachers College for two years, furthering her education at Morningside and graduating with a B.S. degree. She has taught in many of the area schools and is presently librarian at the Ida Grove High School.

Gail was united in marriage to James Stanton, June 29, 1958. Four children were born to them: Nancy Ann Stanton Jacobs, born April 21, 1961; Bradley James Stanton, born April 22, 1963; Timothy Roy Stanton, stillborn, December 7, 1968; and Thomas Alan Stanton, born October 11, 1970. Their marriage was dissolved in 1980.

Nancy Stanton Jacobs received her education in the Eastwood Schools, graduating in 1979. She took up nurses training at WIT, graduating as an RN. She was married to John Jacobs, Jr, and they are the parents of two children: David Thomas and Megan Marie. Bradley graduated from Eastwood in 1981 and took a one-year course in electrician work. He is working I.B.P. in South Sioux City. He was baptized and confirmed in St John Lutheran Church at Cushing.
