William Black
By Jean BakerWilliam ‘Bill’ Black was born January 9, 1876, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and lived there until coming to Woodbury County where he met and married Lavina Margaret Hantsbarmet, who was born May 11, 1877, in Correctionville, Iowa. He farmed most of his life. To this union were born fourteen children – nine sons and five daughters. They lived in the Salix area. Upon retirement from the farm, Mr. and Mrs. Black moved to Dodson, Montana, where several of their children lived. Mr. Black died in Dodson, Montana, in 1947, and then Mrs. Black moved to California where she died in 1951. Both are buried in the cemetery in Sloan, Iowa.
Floyd, their oldest child was born in 1896 and died in 1956. He lived most of his life in Fairfield, Montana. He is survived by his wife, Beth, and two sons: Wayne of Dallas, Texas; and Gary of Washington.
Melissa Black Jorgensen was born in 1898. She married Harry Jorgensen of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, who passed away in 1977. She has one daughter, Jean Jorgensen Baker of Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
Gale Black was born in 1899 and died in 1983. While a young man he moved to Montana and married Vera Holman. They had five children: Dick Russell, Steve, and Janice (all of Montana); and Danzel of Oklahoma.
Rolland ‘Red’ Black was born in 1900 and died in 1981. He married Grace Forsythe of Sloan, Iowa, who is now deceased. They moved to Long Beach, California, where two sons were born, Robert and William and they both now live in Long Beach. Rolland moved to Dodson, Montana, after the death of his wife and lived there until his death.
William Black, Jr. was born in 1901. He married Bessie Stout and taught school in Dodson, Montana, for many years. They have four sons: Donald of Omaha, Nebraska; Darrel and James of Montana; and John of Oregon.
Janet Black Venz was born in 1903 and died in 1934. After graduating from Salix and went to California where she married and lived the rest of her life.
Cleota Black was born in 1905 and died in 1982. After leaving Salix, she lived for many years in California and later moved to Oregon.
Ernest ‘Sam’ Black was born in 1906 and died in 1937. He lived his entire life in Salix, Iowa, and was killed by a train in Salix.
Mary Black Sweet was born in 1908 and died in 1947. She and her husband were both killed in a plane crash in Utah on their way back to Salix for a visit from California.
John Black was born in 1910 and died in 1963. He farmed near Salix for many years and then moved to California.
Laurence Black was born in 1912. He joined the Navy after finishing high school in Salix and then later made his home in California. He and his wife, Ruth, live in San Marcos, California. He has a son, Larry, living in California.
Margaret Black was born in 1913. She attended school in Salix and it was during her senior year in high school that she became ill with diphtheria and passed away in 1932.
Charles Black was born in 1915 and died in 1983. He is survived by his wife, Vina, who still lives in Montana.
Donald Black was born in 1917 and died in 1954. He graduated from Salix school and later played baseball for the Cleveland Indians; he died of a massive stroke while playing. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and three daughters, Donna, Stephanie and Georgia.
