Herman A Binnebose
By Herman J BinneboseJohn and Alvina Binnebose were among the first pioneers in Woodbury County, Leeds, Iowa. On March 15, 1890, they moved from their farm in Plymouth County to their home on Springfield Street to run a ‘Rooming and Boarding’ house. He changed his name from Binneboese then.
The couple have five children: Manda, Ida, Meta, Herman and John, Jr.
John, Sr. was the son of August and Wilhelmina Binneboese of Pomerania, Germany. Wilhelmina had married August in Germany; he died living her a widow with small children. She then married William Kowalke, and had a family by him. Wilhelmina was a large ‘mixed’ family. Wilhelmina was born in 1823 in Germany. Her husband, William Kowalke, was born in 1823 also, in Pomerania, Germany.
John was born in Germany in 1852. Alvina Priebe Binnebose was also a native of Germany, born August 27, 1862, the daughter of William and Charlotte Rabien Priebe. Alvina lived over 62 years in Woodbury County. She died at the age of 94 on March 4, 1956.
John and Alvina had a large home, still standing in Leeds, Iowa, as of 1983. They served food and provided lodging to men working in the Leeds Brickyard, stove factory and an iron works factory. They prospered well and were a very respected family.
John died February 11, 1936 during one of the worse blizzards on record. The snow plows were out especially to clear Springfied Street for the funeral.
Their son, Herman Albert Binnebose, married Marie Toeppe Binnebose on July 24, 1907. She was the daughter of Carl Toeppe and Margaret Klee Toeppe from Tettenborn, Saxony, Germany. As a young girl, Marie came to this country on the ship named ‘Pickhubun’ from Hamburg, Germany. Her father, Carl Toeppe, was custodian for St Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City for years.
Herman and Marie were sorrowed by the death of their first son, John born June 14, 1908; he died January 4, 1908. A daughter, Viola, was born October 9, 1909; she was an only daughter. Herman John was born January 12, 1912; then came Carl Oscar born March 21, 1915; then another son, Lawrence Franklin, born August 28, 1916; then came Walter, born May 16, 1916; the last son, Earl Emil, was born in May of 1921.
The Herman Binnebose family resided on an acreage northwest of Leeds just within the city limits. Herman worked at the Leeds brickyards and alter at the Cudahay Packing Plant. In the early days, he would ride his horse into Leeds, leave the horse at his parents’ home and take the street car to the packing house. He raised livestock and had a large garden. He and Marie were charter members of Calvary Lutheran Church in Leeds, and very active in church work. They were an honor to the community.
God prospered them well. From ‘outside plumbing’ and oil lamps they dvanced to modern facilities, and life for them was much improved with the automobile they purchased to replace the horse and buggy. With six children they were never lonesome.
Viola later married Albert Harms of LeMars, Iowa. They have one daughter, Jo Ann who married Donald Prather.
Herman J Binnebose, Jr., was a bachelor until 1969, when he married Ilo Binnebose, his brother’s widow.
Carl O Binnebose married Ilo Northwick, December 30, 1937. They had a son and two daughters: Merlin John, Mardee Rae and Sheila Irene. Carl died January 9, 1966.
Lawrence never married; he died January 11, 1965
Walter married Myrna Beck also of Sioux City. They have three children: Carol, Dennis and Sharon.
Earl married Margaret Ericksen of Alcester, South Dakota. They have three children: Barbara, Brad and Vicki.
Marie died March 1961. Herman, Sr., died in May of 1966. Herman and Marie will never be forgotten.
