Jacob William Bennett was born 31 August 1878 in Wolf Lake, Indiana, eldest son of Elias Bennett and Rachel S Evans. He came with his family by covered wagon to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1882 and the family were well known pioneer settlers of the Leeds and James area, before the town of Leeds was platted. At 15, in 1893, Jacob’s names appears in the Sunday School Class of F R Ketchum, teacher, of the Olivet Presbyterian Church of Leeds, Iowa, where he was an avid singer.

He married Mary Alice Dunn, daughter of Patrick Dunn and Catharine Murphy, on 7 April 1902 in Sioux City. They farmed in Perry Twp, Plymouth County area until 1916 when they moved to Wibaux, Montana, by train, taking their livestock, hired hand, and all possessions. They returned in 1919 to farm again in Plymouth County, moving lastly to a 360 acre farm just east of Leeds in Woodbury Co. He was a well-known livestock dealer and area residents came to buy produce and milk. He also owned a farm in Plymouth Co. on which he had an orchard. He died 16 Nov 1940.

Elias Bennett born 5 November 1851 in Hecla, Indiana, was the son of Aaron Bennett and Esther ‘Hattie’ Moore. Elias married Rachel S Evans, 20 October 1872, in Noble County, Indiana. Rachel was born 9 December 1851 in Ohio. They farmed in the Wolf Lake, Indiana area. Their children: Harriet Catherine, born 3 April 1876; Jacob; Marion Ephraim, born 1881. Elias farmed in Concord Twp, Woodbury County and Hungerford Twp in Plymouth County, Iowa. Rachel died 5 January 1915, and Elias died 3 December 1933.

Aaron Bennett was born about 1816 in Delaware County, Ohio, where he spent his boyhood, son of Isaac Bennett. He married Esther ‘Hattie’ Moore, 24 January 1944, at Columbia City, Whitley County, Indiana, and farmed there until about 1892. Esther, born about 1826 in Pennsylvania, was the daughter of George Moore (native of Germany, who later came to Columbia City vicinity, where he died). Their children: Emery, born 1842, died 24 Dec 1862 in the Civil War; Susannah born 1845; James born 1848; Elias born 1851; Samantha born 1852; Charles born 1854; William born 1856; Matilda born 1858. Esther Bennett died 5 February 1860. Aaron married Elizabeth Fenton Phillips, 3 October 1867, in (Kosicusko) County, Indiana. They ‘Homesteaded’ in Holt County, Nebraska in 1893, leaving shortly thereafter and moving in Leeds, Sioux City, Iowa, where Aaron died 2 December 1894. Elizabeth died 12 June 1900. Elizabeth had four children when she married Aaron: Mary Jane, Jennie, John, Harvey (Phillips). Their children: Noah, George.

Jacob ‘Jake’ Bennett died 16 November 1940 and Mary Alice ‘Mollie’ died 9 January 1968. Their children: 1-Marie Catharine born 31 January 1904, married Lloyd Richard Booth, 18 July 1923 (born 1897), died 1959). Their children: Lloyd Eugene died 1945, WWII; Dorothy Marie; Ray William. Marie married George Arnold Thomsen, 27 October 1962; he died 1983. 2-Pearl Elizabeth born 19 July 1906, married William Aloysius Gruber, 27 Aug 1931 (born 1900, died 1982). They adopted: Joseph William and Eugene Michael. 3-Anna Laura, born 1 December 1908, married Timothy Ralph Schindel, 12 December 1927 (born 1900, died 1951). Their children: Robert Ralph and Nancy Lee. 4-Benjamin William, born 5 May 1911, married Lucy Annetta Kightlinger, 11 July 1933 (born 1909). Ben died 22 May 1948. Their children: Lloyd William and Connie Lou. Lucy married John Bye, 27 July 1961. 5-Evelyn Margaret, born 24 January 1914, married Delmas Charles Kightlinger, 5 August 1934, (born 1911). Their child: Jerome Phillip. 6-Francis Phillip ‘Mutt’, born 13 April 1916 – died 3 October 1978, married Leona Evonne Briggs, 31 January 1940 (born 1920, died 1946). Their children: Joseph William, born and died 1941; Thomas Delano; Donna Jeane. Francis married Geneva DeJong, 23 October 1948 (born 1919, died 1971). Their child: Eugene Jacob. Francis married Irene Margaret Greenlander Kausler, 15 October 1971. 7-Virginia Marguerite, born 15 December 1919, married Elmer William Boettger, 23 August 1942 (born 1917). Their children: LaRay Patrick, Delbert William, Kent Darwin, Curtis Keith. 8-Marian Alice, born 8 May 1927, married William Amos McArthur, 21 June 1947 (born 1925). Their children: Gary Lee, Susan Kay, Mark Bryan and Linda Marie.
