Joseph Cox (1826-1890) was of French Canadian descent, as far as we know. He married Rachel Ann Rawlins (1828-1908), in the year 1846 as Grand Lake, New Brunswick. Not much is known about Joseph and Racel. They had thirteen children: Mary Elizabeth ‘Libby’ Cox, born 1847, married Elick Badden; Charles William Cox (1849-1869); Rebecca Ann Cox (1851-1969); Eleanor ‘Ella’ Jane Cox (1853-1925) married William Moss; Ira Rawlins Cox, born 1856, at New Brunswick and at 19 years old passed away; Georgia Cox, born 1858, married William Smeaton; Sarah Melissa Cox (1860-1866); Abigail ‘Abbie’Cox, born 1862, married Dennis Priester; Annette ‘Nettie’ Cox, born 1864, married Ed McVicker; Francis Delight ‘Light’ Cox, born 1866, married Allan Frentress; Ida Estella Cox (1868-1939) married Edgar Bower; Charles Samuel Cox (1870-1941), born Mason City, married Jessie Ethel Button; Joseph ‘Ain’ Cox (1872-1937) was born at Elk Point, South Dakota, married Lilie Amanda Button (1872-1941) at Mapleton, Iowa, in 1890. Lillie was the daughter of Ida Lillie Hall and Oscar Button.

Joseph ‘Ain’ and Lillie had four children, three girls and one boy. The first girl, Beulah Hazel Cox (1893-1966), married John Irving Holzman (1892-1966), married John Irving Holzman (1892-1968), John ‘Jack’ and Beulah had two children, Wayne Irving Holzman (1918-1980) married Fern Hanner, born 1922, and they had three girls. Jack and Beulah’s second child was Barbara Bethene, born 1920, who married Harold Kincaid, born 1919; they had four children.

Their second child was Bethene Ida Cox (1897-1982) who married Charles Wesley Hall (1896-1982). Charles and Bethene ‘Babe’ had two children. Macil Marie Hall, born 1920, married Clemence Claus, born 1919, and they had three children. Donald Wesley Hall, born 1926, who married Velma Lavern Slyter, born 1926, had three boys.

Their third child was the only boy in the family, Dewitt ‘Mick’ Button Cox (1902-1955), who married Margaret Mortenson, born 1902, and have five girls. The first child, Margret ‘Lavonne’ Cox, born 1924, married Robert Millarke, born 1925; they had one girl, married Oral Steinhoff ‘Bud’ (1927-1976) and they had four children. Norman Jean Cox, born 1932, the third girl, married Cecil Coon, born 1933, and they had two children. Marcia Corinne Cox, born 1938, the fourth girl, married Richard Worrell, born 1936, and they had five children. Judith Maureen Cox, born 1940, the fifth girl, married Dean Specht, born 1939, and they have four boys.

Their fourth child was Joyce Aileen Cox, born 1912, who married Alfred Edward Weber, born 1901; they had three children, Eldon Carroll Weber, born 1935, married Dorothy ‘Jeanne’ Hummel, born 1936, and they had three boys. Keith, married to Pat Large, has two children. Retha Lillian Weber married Sherman Sawin and thad three children, was divorced, and remarried Richard O Lillie and has two stepdaughters also.

Joseph ‘Ain’ and Lillie lived around Smithland all their lives. Lillie was born north of Smithland, Iowa, and got her education at Smithland Public School and later taught in the vicinity. Joseph farmed and rasied livestock in and around Smithland all his adult life.
